How to change your temporary work permit into a permanent resident card in Canada

Applying for one of Canada’s popular immigration paths is the fastest way to turn your temporary work permit into permanent residency.

It is possible to switch from a temporary work visa to a permanent one. How? In the parts that follow, we’ll look at the top four best routes.

Option 1: Express Entry  (Best Option)

Under the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) for Express Entry, points are given for a number of different things. Under the Express Entry CRS grid, a temporary work permit holder can get up to 70 points in the Core/Human Capital part and up to 100 points in the Skills Transferability factor based on their work experience in Canada. If you have a real job offer, you can get up to 200 more points.

A work permit holder with legal work experience and a job offer have a big point advantage over other candidates for Express Entry. This makes it more likely that they will be asked to apply and, eventually, get permanent residency in Canada.

You could use one of the Express Entry streams, which is:

Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)

Under the Federal Skilled Worker Program, if you are working temporarily for a Canadian company and the company has given you a permanent job, you may be able to apply for permanent residency. This kind of deal is called an “arranged job.” Under the Foreign Skilled Worker Program, the contract worker needs to get the right number of points. Points are given to candidates based on their schooling, age, ability to adapt, language skills, and the job offer. This process could take between 12 and 18 months.

Option 2: the Canadian Experience Class (CEC).

Temporary workers in specialized jobs who have worked in Canada and want to apply for the Canadian Experience Class program can do so. Temporary workers who don’t have enough points for the government skilled worker program often choose this option.

For the CEC, candidates must have completed post-secondary education in Canada and worked for at least two years, or they must have worked for one year and finished post-secondary education in Canada. Candidates who meet the CEC requirements must meet one of the above requirements before they can apply for permanent residency in Canada.

Option 3: Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP)

Most provinces have their own provincial nominee programs that let them help people who want to move to Canada apply for permanent residency (PR). Candidates for a provincial program must plan to live in the area for which they are applying. Programs often look like those given at the federal level, even though the different streams and options in each province might be very different.

Under a PNP, it can take up to 12 to 18 months to process an application for permanent residency. Get in touch with us if you want to know more.

Option 4: Quebec Experience Class (QEC)

The Quebec Experience Class can be used by contract workers to apply for permanent residence. Both the Canadian Experience Class (CEQ) and the Quebec Experience Class (QEC) have similar standards, but the QEC has more.

For the QEC, you need to be able to speak French at an intermediate level and have worked in Quebec for at least a year in a skilled job (with a temporary work permit). The state of Quebec will give successful applicants a Quebec Selection Certificate, which will let them apply for permanent residency.
