Concerning the University of Notre Dame
Rev. Edward F. Sorin, C.S.C., a priest of the French religious order the Congregation of Holy Cross, started the University of Notre Dame in November 1842. It is right next to South Bend, Indiana, which is the hub of an urban area with over 315 thousand people.
Indiana officially recognized the university in 1844. Priests from the Holy Cross ran it up until 1967. A two-tiered board of directors and fellows made up of both religious and secular people took over after that.
Father Sorin wanted to build a great Catholic university in America, and that’s how Notre Dame came to be. The school has stayed true to its religious and intellectual roots.
There is a world that needs us to be a source of light. People think that our theology and philosophy departments are two of the best in the world. Additionally, faculty from all fields work with us to ensure that Notre Dame’s Catholic identity guides everything we do.
The church still does its thinking at Notre Dame. Some lawyers study civil rights and religious liberty; scientists and engineers study protecting the environment; and sociologists study religion and moral practices.

The university was the first place to study the aerodynamics of glider flying, the transmission of wireless messages, and the formulas for making synthetic rubber. Today, scientists are making important discoveries in astrophysics, radiation chemistry, environmental sciences, the spread of tropical diseases, peace studies, cancer, robotics, and nanoelectronics.
Four out of five first-year students have always lived on campus, making Notre Dame a very private school. Not only do students come to Notre Dame to learn how to think, but also how to live. Many of the experiences that graduates have in the residence halls at Notre Dame stay with them for the rest of their lives.
