About McDaniel College Dorsey Scholarships

The Dorsey Scholarship is given by McDaniel College to exceptional first-year students (both domestic and foreign) who have the potential to become future leaders within the institution.

Recipients of Dorsey scholarships will act as honorary ambassadors for the college, showcasing it in an honest and forthright manner. All candidates who file their admissions application by December 15th will be considered for the Dorsey Scholarship.

Through participation in social events, leadership development initiatives, student organizations, Greek Life, the Student Government Association, and other activities, we help you get the most out of your experience.

Working Together for a Safe Campus

At McDaniel College, the Department of Campus Safety assists students in having a successful and secure experience. All security, fire, and medical emergencies on campus are the responsibility of the department’s personnel. We offer the college community round-the-clock security, 365 days a year. The department’s proactive approach to campus safety has been recognized with the 2019 Governor’s Crime Prevention Prize, which was received by Campus Safety.

Scholarship Categories and Benefits

It’s easy to get motivated by a Dorsey Scholarship’s monetary value. Each Dorsey Scholar is awarded a scholarship that pays for McDaniel College’s tuition, lodging, and board as a result of this historic gift.

A stipend for books (up to $600 per semester), technology (up to $2000), and travel expenses to McDaniel College Europe in Budapest (up to $2000) are also provided to Dorsey students.

However, the significance of receiving a Dorsey Scholar award far outweighs the money.

Our Dorsey Scholars, by accepting a Dorsey Scholarship, take a position in this college’s history and join the giving tradition that enables McDaniel for all of our students. Philip Henry Dorsey’s gift is one of the reasons McDaniel continues to draw exceptional young people from all around the nation.

Ambassadors for Dorsey

On campus, Dorsey Scholars act as mentors and leaders in academia. They collaborate closely with the college president, greeting distinguished visitors and sharing their McDaniel experiences. They provide illustrations of what can be accomplished with perseverance. In summary, their brilliance, wit, and kindness embody everything that is best about McDaniel.

Qualifications

All first-year applicants are eligible to apply for the Dorsey Scholarship if they submit their admissions application by December 15th. Admissions counselors evaluate each applicant’s academic record and level of rigor, as well as their drive, character, and achievement potential, in order to determine which candidates may be Dorsey Scholars.

About twenty first-year students—roughly the top two percent of the applicant pool—are selected to compete in the Dorsey Scholars program. In January, admissions counselors extend invitations to students in person and through print.

The Competition for Dorsey Scholars

The day before the annual Scholars on the Hill event is when the Dorsey Scholar Competition takes place. Friday night is when Dorsey applicants arrive on campus for a dinner event where they can mingle with the president, other college officials, and current Dorsey Scholars.

Candidates for the Dorsey Scholarship will have the opportunity to engage in a virtual interview with the Dorsey Scholar Selection Committee if they attend the Friday reception and the Scholars on the Hill event the following day. The purpose of this interview is to evaluate each Dorsey Scholar candidate’s qualities and accomplishments, and it takes place the week after these events.
