Concerning Indiana University

IU was one of the first public colleges established west of the Allegheny Mountains when it opened in 1820. Today, it is widely recognized as a leading public research university on a global scale. Discover how far we’ve come and some significant achievements that we’ve accomplished along the way.

Indiana University is a state-run higher education system that includes the main campus located in Bloomington as well as campuses located in Gary (also known as the Northwest), South Bend, Kokomo, New Albany (also known as the Southeast), and Richmond (also known as the East). Additionally, Indiana University operates schools in collaboration with Purdue University at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis and Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne.

Most branches provide master’s degree programs, and all offer undergraduate bachelor’s degree programs. Doctorate degrees are awarded at the campuses in Indianapolis and Bloomington. Founded in Bloomington in 1903, the medical school is headquartered in Indianapolis and has branches across the state.

Before the Bloomington division’s 1958 relocation to the nation’s capital, students at the medical school attended classes in Indianapolis and Bloomington throughout the majority of its existence. With a solid reputation in the fine arts, including one of the top music schools in the country, the Bloomington main campus is a comprehensive institution.

It also offers legal and business education. Facilities on campus include the Nuclear Theory Center, the Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender, and Reproduction, the Center for the Study of Global Change, the Folklore Institute, the Integrated Science and Accelerator Technology Hall, and the Center for Innovative Computer Applications. Overall, over 100,000 students are enrolled in the university system.
