Why study at Gustavus Adolphus College?

Numerous factors play a role in your decision to attend college. You can make up your decision about academic quality, residential life, financial aid, and even food! Before choosing the university to spend the next four years at, we hope you will visit several institutions, both large and small.

Why, then, Gustavus? We are renowned for our superior academic standing. In our opinion, that is the most crucial aspect of a college. You are, after all, attending college to further your education. Academic quality can be measured in various ways, including class size, graduation rates, curriculum selections, faculty credentials, and more.

However, a college education also consists of a variety of experiences, both in and out of the classroom. We hope you explore the entire campus to see whether Gustavus is the appropriate fit for you, regardless of your interests—theatre or intramural sports, social justice or music, or the arts or athletics. Your choice of education ultimately boils down to one thing: finding the proper fit.

Consider carefully what qualities you want from a college. Always remember that we are here to support you. And we hope you choose to become a Gustie when the time comes!

Scholarship Categories and Benefits

After being accepted to Gustavus, all applicants who are citizens of the United States or hold permanent residency will automatically be evaluated for the following renewable merit-based scholarships:

Gold Scholarship

This yearly prize, which has a starting value of $25,000, is given to you in honor of your accomplishments in the past and the hope for your continued success at Gustavus.

Dean’s Scholarship

Recipients of awards ranging from $32,000 to $34,000 each year ($128,000 to $136,000 over four years) are students who demonstrate notable leadership, service, or academic performance in their communities, churches, or high schools.

The President’s Scholarship

One of the college’s five key values—academic excellence—is reflected in awards of up to $36,500 per year. Previous awardees usually completed academically demanding high school coursework, were placed in the upper echelons of their graduating class, and scored an ACT composite of 30 or higher or a SAT composite of 1400.

**NOTE FOR 2024 APPLICANTS: Submission of ACT or SAT results is suggested but not necessary to be eligible for the Presidential Scholarship.

The only scholarships that are awarded exclusively to one another are the Dean’s and President’s Scholarships. The Dean’s Scholarship or the President’s Scholarship may be awarded to a student, but not both. A Dean’s or President’s Scholarship may be placed on top of all other scholarships (Gustavus or outside aid).

National Merit College-Sponsored Scholarship

A renewable $7,500 grant will be awarded to National Merit Grant winners who list Gustavus as their top college choice. Ten National Merit finalists will earn Full Tuition Scholarships, and finalists may also be awarded a President’s or Dean’s Scholarship with a maximum merit-based grant of $42,500 (or $170,000 over four years). Any further scholarships obtained from Gustavus will be honorary, meaning they will be named but not funded. If qualified, students may also be given need-based financial aid.

Gustavus Legacy Honor

Students whose parents or grandparents are Gustavus alumni, or whose siblings are current Gustavus students or graduates, are eligible to apply for Gustavus Legacy Awards, which are worth $2,500 annually ($10,000 spread over four years). The Alumni Referral Scholarship cannot be awarded to students who also obtain the Gustavus Legacy Award.

Scholarship for Diversity

Rucker, Paul L. Awards of up to $2,500 per year ($10,000 over four years) are given out as scholarships to students who enhance diversity on campus. While taken into account, ethnicity is not the only requirement for eligibility.

Scholarship from Phi Theta Kappa

Upon matriculating from a community college, Phi Theta Kappa members are eligible to apply for $2,500 in annual grants. A minimum of 3.5 college grade point average and 42 quarter credits, or 28 semester hours, are needed. By May 1st, transcripts must be received. With a 3.25 Gustavus cumulative grade point average, this award is renewable.
