Qualifications for Vanier CGS applications

A Vanier CGS applicant needs to be able to:

  • must have obtained a Vanier CGS quota and have received a single Canadian university’s nomination;
  • be enrolled right now in a PhD program where a significant and verified research component is required. Joint programs such as MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, or JD/PhD fall under this category. After the results are announced, plan to pursue full-time doctoral studies and research at the nominating institution either in the summer semester or the next academic year.
  • have finished my current program’s maximum of 20 months of full-time study. The months of finished courses are calculated starting on the day the doctorate was enrolled.
  • by May 1, 2024, have completed a doctoral program that requires a maximum of 32 months of uninterrupted study (including collaborative graduate research programs, expedited programs, and those previously enrolled without a Master’s degree). If you are enrolled in a collaborative graduate research program—MD/PhD, MA/PhD, or DVM/PhD, for example—this prerequisite is applicable.
  • Individuals who fit this description may take advantage of the 32 months regardless of whether they have previously enrolled in a Master’s program.
  • The calculation of the study months begins on the date when the applicant officially registers for the joint program, which includes the Master’s component.
  • The months of study completed are calculated from the date of doctoral enrollment for students who enroll directly from a bachelor’s degree to a doctorate (without first enrolling in a master’s program).
  • previous enrollment in and successful completion of a post-baccalaureate master’s program. The months of study that have been finished are calculated starting on the day that the master’s program was first enrolled.
  • Meet your institution’s requirements for a first-class grade point average, or its equivalent, in each of your last two years of full-time study. It is recommended that applicants check with the school what constitutes a first-class average.
  • To enroll in or finish a PhD program, they also cannot currently have or have had a doctoral-level fellowship or scholarship from CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC.
  • Please be aware that funding is only available for the Ph.D. portion of joint programs.

Qualifications for the study program:

  • To be eligible, doctoral programs must include a sizable amount of research that results in an institution- or expert-reviewed thesis, major research project, dissertation, scholarly publication, performance, recital, or exhibit; these activities must be necessary for program completion and must be subject to review by the institution.
  • Study programs with a clinical focus, like clinical psychology, and collaborative graduate research programs that lead to professional degrees (like MD/PhD, DVM/Ph.D., or JD/PhD) are also acceptable as long as they have a significant independent research component, as previously mentioned.
