SOAS Charles Wallace Pakistan Fellowship – Study In UK

Pakistani students may apply for the SOAS Charles Wallace Pakistan Fellowship, UK to study in Fellowship-level courses at SOAS University.

Description of the scholarship:

The Charles Wallace Pakistan Trust awards a single fellowship each year to a Pakistani academic whose work would benefit greatly from a three-month stay at SOAS. This placement will take place at the SOAS South Asia Institute from January to May 2024. The goal of this fellowship is to give the selected scholars a valuable chance to advance their academic goals and career aspirations.

The three-month visiting fellowship’s main goals cover a number of important factors:

  • Actively enhancing the Institute’s research environment.
  • Giving SSAI (South Asia Institute) members and research students the beneficial opportunity to collaborate with distinguished academics from outside institutions.
  • Creating and fostering relationships with academic institutions in Pakistan.
  • Facilitating joint research projects between SSAI colleagues and academics from Pakistan.
  • Regarding the contributions that the visiting fellows are anticipated to make:
  • Giving a discussion as part of the Institute’s seminar series.
  • Participating actively in seminars as well as the institution’s larger intellectual community.
  • Possibility of participation in various Institute activities:
  1. Making a presentation at a conference or a departmental seminar series.
  2. Working with Institute members on research projects.
  3. Contributing a piece to the Institute’s working papers collection.
  4. Writing research ideas to submit for awards from outside sources via the Institute.
  5. Increasing the SSAI’s network of connections, which includes those in academics, practice, policy, and the media.

Contribution from visitors

Visitors are expected to participate in the School’s general intellectual activity, including giving a talk in the Institute’s seminar series and actively participating in seminars, among other things. They might also be requested to assist with one or more of the activities of the Institute listed below:

  • Deliver a presentation as part of a departmental seminar series or present a paper at a conference;
  • Work together on a research topic with one or more Institute members;
  • Contribute a piece to the Institute’s working papers collection;
  • Create a research proposal to submit an application for an award from an outside source through the Institute; and
  • Contribute to the SSAI’s network of contacts in the media, academia, practice, and policy-making.

Benefits of the scholarship

The chosen candidate will receive a £1500 monthly stipend in addition to a donation of £900 toward travel expenses and visa fees. The chosen individual will be required to secure independent housing in London.

Nationalities that qualify:

  • Students from Pakistan may apply for this scholarship.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Applicants must be Pakistani nationals who are now resident in Pakistan.
  • Candidates must have obtained a PhD and be employed in one of the SOAS-supported “Pakistan Studies” fields in the arts, humanities, or social sciences.
  • Applicants whose research focuses on modern and contemporary Pakistan in one of the SSAI’s subject areas are especially encouraged to apply: Resources Under Pressure, Citizenship, Rights and Inequality, The Politics of Culture and Religion, Interactions and Interventions in the Arts, and Lineages of Knowledge and Power are some of the topics covered.
  • Applicants are not permitted to use the fellowship to enroll in any higher education institution in the UK, including SOAS, or in conjunction with doing so.
  • Candidates must be in their early to mid-career academic years.
  • Candidates must exhibit sufficient verbal and written English language proficiency to take part in discussions and use reference materials.
  • Applicants must disclose whether they are already receiving any grants or whether they are awaiting the outcomes of previous applications. If this isn’t done, the fellowship might be revoked.

Application Process:

  • A properly completed application form, including Section 11 (a list of your publications) and Section 15 (a description of your proposed study, including justification for choosing SOAS in particular as the location for it).
  • Two recommendation letters.

  • The top three candidates selected for an online interview by the School may be chosen.  After the closing date, more information will be communicated to the candidates who made the shortlist.
