Curriculum and Academic Discipline Selection

Students chosen from abroad experience extraordinary conditions as they learn about Paris over the course of three years of education. More than anything else, they gain from the ENS’s interdisciplinary instruction and intellectual independence. ENS searches for young students who are motivated by curiosity, open-mindedness, and a thirst for study, in addition to the exceptional academic accomplishments expected of them.

ENS values the diversity of its students’ backgrounds, experiences, and profiles and is committed to helping each one develop their abilities. Fluency in French is recommended for students pursuing studies in the arts and humanities.

Curriculum and Academic Discipline Selection

International selection students are motivated by a thirst for knowledge, an open mind, and an inventive and investigative spirit. Equipped with favorable material and economic circumstances (they are housed and get a grant), they can focus on their studies at a top university, all the while exploring Paris and leading a comfortable life.

They gain from both multidisciplinary training, which expands their knowledge in other scientific and humanities fields, and further instruction in their primary scientific specialty. A mentoring system helps to customize the training that is undertaken. The curriculum is research-focused from the start, featuring lab internships and instruction in their primary fields from top researchers.

The training starts with a one-day welcome event and lasts for three weeks, during which there are conferences and debates in the humanities and sciences, department visits, in-depth French lessons, and trips to Paris’s cultural sites, in addition to events and entertainment provided by the many ENS student clubs.

Students are asked to specify which training department they would like to use as their major discipline while applying. In the event of a training project involving two scientific departments, applicants may specify one more minor discipline. Selecting a minor requires a minimum theoretical knowledge in this field and extra assessment conducted through interviews by the department jury.
