POSITION: Research and Development (R&D) Manager

Company Profile

Rainforest Builder Ghana (RBGH) is a subsidiary of Rainforest Builder, an integrated nature technology (“nature tech”) company dedicated to developing and deploying intellectual property to restore tropical forests on a large scale and at a cheap cost. RBGH is situated in Bibiani and will initially operate in the Upper Wassaw, Anhwiaso East, and Anhwiaso South forest reserves. Rainforest Builder Ghana works on both government (Forestry Commission) and community land to restore 100,000 ha of degraded land to natural forest while generating long-term streams of high-quality carbon credits.

Job Description.

The R&D Manager role is vital at RBGH, and we are looking for the smartest, most ambitious, and most devoted person to join our team. The role allows you to work with world-class tropical forest restoration scientists in West Africa on a pioneering project.

The R&D Manager directs Ghana’s Research and Development Department, working with the Group Chief Scientist and Group R&D Department. The Department provides world-class knowledge to find the most efficient and cost-effective strategy to restore degraded land to reference forests in Ghana.

Primary Roles:

  • Monitoring and data collection, including the creation and implementation of a future-proofed sampling protocol for various elements of seed collection and management, carbon stocks, biodiversity, forest structure, and ecosystem function for Rainforest Builder’s own sites and reference forests.
  • Maintain Rainforest Builder’s own tree species database, which includes information on phenology, growth characteristics, regional distribution, ecological requirements, and management practices, to help guide future restoration efforts.
  • Lead and organize all areas of seed collection, processing, and storage planning, including personnel, logistics, training, capacity building, and the maintenance of high-quality seed storage operations, which are important to our business.
  • Coordinate, create, and implement a nursery research trial programme with the goal of identifying cost savings through reduced total nursery time, improved survival, and germination rates.
  • Coordinate, plan, and implement silviculture trials to increase operational efficiency in silvicultural regimes.
  • Manage high-quality data gathering and database maintenance.
  • Form collaborative partnerships with local and international universities and research institutions.
  • Assist the Managing Director and Senior Leadership in their efforts to establish solid relationships with the Forestry Commission of Ghana and other land- and resource-based entities.

REPORTING

The Research and Development Manager reports to Rainforest Builder Ghana’s Managing Director, with a dotted line to the Chief Scientist at HQ and close coordination with the UK Science Department. Bibiani, in the Western North Region, is the headquarters.

SALARY IS NEGOTIABLE

Required Skill or Experience

  • A Masters degree in forestry, ecology, land management, biological science, environmental science, or a related discipline is required; a PhD is strongly encouraged.
  • A minimum of ten years’ experience in one of the following fields is required: research and development in forest restoration; forestry nursery operations; restoration activities; R&D and tree breeding; or related activities.
  • Strong knowledge and experience with experiment planning, design, execution, and analysis, as well as research data interpretation,.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience leading big teams of people to generate consistent results.
  • Experience with experiment planning, design, execution, and analysis, as well as research data interpretation.
  • Proficient with data analysis software, statistical tools, and other applicable applications.
  • Ability to work both alone and collaboratively in a fast-paced, high-performance setting.
