Pretoria University Mastercard Scholarship 2023/24
High-achieving African students interested in the postgraduate study can apply for scholarships being offered by the University of Pretoria (UP) in collaboration with the Mastercard Foundation (MCF), starting in January 2023.
The scholarship program’s background
Starting in January 2023, the University of Pretoria (UP) will begin accepting applications for scholarships for high-achieving African students interested in postgraduate study. These scholarships are being offered in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation.
The Mastercard Foundation focuses on young people in Africa who are academically gifted but economically underprivileged and who will help improve the continent via their knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values as shown through their leadership.
A key component of the curriculum is community service and internships. Selected students are qualified for a full scholarship from the Foundation if they have been provisionally admitted to UP to pursue a postgraduate degree. Graduates are expected to give back to their communities in their home countries after completing their studies.

The Program is Offered Through The Scholarship Program
Students who have applied to and been accepted into one of the following programs at the University of Pretoria are eligible for a full scholarship from the Mastercard Foundation.
- Natural and Agricultural Sciences Faculty
- School of Economic and Management Sciences
- Faculty of Law & Faculty of Humanities
- Engineering, Built Environment, and Information Technology Faculty
Eligibility Requirements
- Candidates must be African nationals.
- Applicants must be in need of financial assistance and come from economically disadvantaged homes.
- Candidates should exhibit leadership potential and should be involved in a project that helps others, such as one in their community, place of worship, or school.
- Academic performance is crucial, and students must always maintain a high grade point average.

Deadline For Applications
Applications for study at UP are accepted beginning on 1 March and must be submitted by 30 August of the year before the intended study year.
Application Method
Students who are interested in attending the University of Pretoria must complete the application process in order to be considered for The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program.
Step 1

Step 2
Your application will be reviewed by members of the pertinent faculty after it has been submitted. You will be informed by the faculty if you have been accepted.

Step 4
