POSITION: Senior Surveyor I
JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Senior Surveyor I is classified as an intermediate to advanced level Surveyor position. The primary function is to examine and report on vessels and other marine structures during and after construction to ensure compliance with the applicable requirements for maintaining the vessel’s ABS classification and meeting the associated statutory and special service requirements for the safety of life at sea, load line, tonnage, cargo gear, and pollution prevention certification. When necessary, responsible for implementing office procedures and evaluating business performance at a certain port.
What You’ll Do:
- Acts as the organization’s professional specialist in the implementation of relevant rules, laws, requirements, concepts, principles, and processes.
- Routine surveys are performed on classed vessels, platforms, or other marine constructions, as well as at manufacturers, to ensure classification and compliance with legislative requirements.
- Prepares technically accurate and timely reports on inspections and surveys completed.
- Contacts clients to handle issues within their areas of expertise.
- Maintains ordered and current survey files in the area of responsibility.
- Maintains an active awareness of new methods and developments influencing the technical scope of assigned tasks, and makes recommendations for improvements in surveying procedures and safety programs as such developments merit. Recommends innovative approaches to problems found and adjusts methods, procedures, or design as needed.
- Plans, schedules, and manages various phases of surveying work while monitoring the quality of service provided.
- Monitors the work and projects of subordinate surveyors to assure the quality, content, consistency, and continuity of work.
- Leads, guides, and trains surveyors who are newer or less experienced.
- Promotes ABS’s services and capabilities to existing and future clients.
What You’ll Need:
Education & Experience
- Qualifications for Surveyor II include a two-year program in engineering or physical science from a tertiary institution, or relevant seagoing experience as a certificated ship officer, as well as meeting the minimum requirements and knowledge listed.
- A minimum of three (3) years of experience working as a Surveyor II.
- Requirements for the role include knowledge of ABS technical positioning in the marine industry and at least eight years of expertise in engineering or surveying with an IACS member classification society.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Appropriate qualification and/or licensing in areas of specialization may be necessary.
- Ability to gain a working understanding of ABS Rules, Guides, statutory requirements, and relevant directives, as well as the ABS Employee Safety Policy.
- Ability to read engineering designs and understand shipbuilding and vessel operations.
- The ability to conduct surveys in the defined format.
- Knowledge of computer applications or software packages relevant to job duties.
- Knowledge of linked technical interfaces is necessary for collaborative project work.
- Knowledge of ship engineering systems and machinery.
- Ability to deliver relevant information in English, both orally and in writing, about the specified area of technical knowledge.
- Ability to analyze problems and provide solutions.
Reporting Relationships:
Will report to a Principal Surveyor or higher, under the supervision of a Survey Manager or District/Country Manager as needed. The incumbent may supervise or provide leadership direction to lower-level surveyors. An administrative support staff member may provide support or assistance to the incumbent, as appropriate to his or her office.
Working Conditions:
Travel to and from survey locations and production operations by various marine boats, offshore platforms, or buildings. Some work may be done in an office setting. Some work may be undertaken in limited locations, necessitating the use of vertical ladders of varying heights and construction staging of varying heights. The use of small tools and the wearing of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) in compliance with ABS safety regulations may be necessary.
