POSITION: Consultant – Marketing Specialist

Collaborating with different partners throughout sub-Saharan Africa, we enhance livelihoods, bolster food and nutrition security, boost employment, and maintain the integrity of natural resources. Also, IITA belongs to CGIAR, an international agricultural research collaboration aimed at ensuring food security.
IITA is executing a pioneering project in Ghana that utilizes the Black Soldier Fly (BSF) technology to transform organic waste from urban areas and agricultural byproducts into affordable, protein-rich components for animal feed while producing BSF frass as an organic fertilizer for crop cultivation. IITA aims to hire a MARKETING SPECIALIST as a consultant to become part of an energetic team working on the BSF Project, also known as the BBEST Project.
The Role
The chosen individual will oversee the creation and execution of a successful commercialization plan for the BSF products (dried larvae and organic fertilizer) from the central unit (CU) located in the Nsawam Adoagyiri Municipal region of Accra. This role is accountable to the BBEST Project Management Unit (PMU) and the Acting CU Manager.
Main Duties
- Determine the possible clients, purchasers, and other recipients of BSF products (feed manufacturers, pig, chicken, fish, and vegetable growers) in the CU region and nationwide.
- Arrange the marketing platforms and pinpoint the appropriate distribution channels for the BSF products to create trustworthy markets in the region.
- Generate awareness, interest, and demand for BSF products to encourage the adoption and use of BSF products, grounded in findings from BBEST project research results.
- Launch the BSF products in the market based on the CU’s production levels.
- Evaluate the success of the commercialization strategy’s implementation by analyzing sales data.
- Collaborate with the BBEST communication officer to create branding assets and sales presentations.
- Generate monthly technical reports summarizing activities performed and results achieved for the PMU and the interim CU Manager.
Necessary Skills or Experience
Desired Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in agricultural economics, business management, or Higher National Diploma with hands-on experience in marketing agricultural goods.
- 3–5 years of experience in a comparable position, particularly within the marketing division of a private feed, food, or brewery business.
Essential Skills
- To be inventive and focused on the market while being able to convert research findings into effective marketing strategies.
- To effectively adopt a practical method at the beginning of the task while simultaneously thinking strategically and being capable of formulating long-term marketing strategies as production at the CU escalates.
- Understanding of agricultural goods, their supply chains, and farming techniques.
- Comprehension of the market environments for BSF products
- Skills in problem-solving to tackle marketing issues
- Outstanding proficiency in computer skills (Microsoft Office, internet)
- Effective communication and writing abilities
- A collaborative individual capable of engaging with both academic professionals and those with minimal or no formal education.
- Proficiency in English, both spoken and written. Having knowledge of French is a beneficial asset.
