Criteria for Eligibility

  • must be at least eighteen years old by February 1 of the year the grant starts;
  • be a citizen of one of the participating countries (as listed on the Australia Awards website) and live in that country at the time of the grant application;
  • not live in Australia permanently, be an Australian citizen, or be seeking for a visa to live in Australia permanently;
  • During the application, selection, and mobilization stages, applicants cannot be married, engaged, or in a de facto relationship with someone who has permanent residency, Australian or New Zealand citizenship, or is eligible to do so. This rule does not apply to people who live on Cook Island, Niue, or Tokelau and have New Zealand citizenship; instead, they must apply for a student visa [subclass 500].
  • not be serving in the military right now;
  • People who have never been given a long-term Australia Award before can’t apply until they have spent the same amount of time away from Australia. To give an example, someone who has had an Australia Awards Scholarship in Australia for four years but has not lived abroad for eight years cannot apply for another Australia Awards Scholarship.
  • be able to meet any requirements set by the Program Area or the applicant’s home country’s government, such as having a certain number of years of work experience in a related field;
  • be able to meet the acceptance requirements of the school where the award is to be used (program areas may have to remove an award offer if the recipient can’t meet the acceptance requirements of the school). This might not be clear until program areas send requests for placement to certain schools.
  • be able to meet all the standards set by the Department of Home Affairs to get a student visa. This means that the program area might have to take back an award offer if the winner can’t meet the visa requirements.
