In October 2019, the second phase of the Equity project (www.programme-equite.org) will start to help Fair Trade grow in West Africa. It does business in Ghana, Burkina Faso, Mali, Togo, Benin, and Ivory Coast. Its goal is to help Ghana grow by helping fair trade sectors grow.
Job Description
SENIOR NATIONAL TECHNICAL ASSISTANT – GHANA, Research Agronomists and Veterinarians Without Borders
Since 2019, Agronomes et Vétérinaires Sans Frontières (AVSF) has been working with Commerce Equitable France (CEF) on the EQUITE Program, which is in its second phase and aims to contribute to sustainable economic development, fight poverty, and improve farming in West Africa by supporting the growth of fair trade sectors that can withstand the effects of climate change.
The main goals of the EQUITE program are to:
- Help set up producer organizations in southern countries and help the sectors where they work by promoting fair trade;
- Fairtrade cocoa cooperatives in Côte d’Ivoire need to improve their business, governance, and management skills.
- Build up the institutions that support fair trade,
- Use fair trade as a way to speed up the greening of production and processing methods, which will lead to organic certifications in the end.
- Promote equality between men and women and the inclusion of young people in the value chains of fair trade,
Since 2019, the six West African countries of Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Mali, and Togo have been running the EQUITE 2 program on their own. All certified products are eligible, including cocoa, fruit (mango, pineapple, baobab, etc.), shea, cashew nuts, crafts, sesame, coffee, hibiscus, etc.
Accra will be home to the Principal National Technical Assistant. On March 20, 2023, he or she will take office. He or she will have a fixed-term contract for one year, which could be extended. For the Principal National Technical Assistants to do their job, they would have to visit project beneficiary sites very often.
Main tasks and responsibilities:
- Help Producer Organizations carry out activities that the project is paying for,
- Help the Fair Trade Ghana network do the things that the project is paying for,
- Support work on commercializing innovations in Ghana that were helped by the program,
Skills or Experience Needed
- Agronomist or agro-economist with at least five years of experience in the field of strengthening producer organizations and fair trade sectors in terms of organization and money.
- Learn the basic ideas and goals of Fair Trade.
- Being able to speak both English and French is a plus.
