Estonia, Malta, and Slovenia: Toughest Schengen Visa Destinations for Travellers

Recent data show that 18% of applications for Schengen visas by Indian travelers are turned down. This is a big number. Estonia, Malta, and Slovenia were the countries that said no the most, while Germany, Italy, and Hungary were the countries that said yes the most.

Recent data show that Indian travelers have one of the highest rates of having their Schengen visas turned down.

India applied for more than 600,000 Schengen visas in 2022, making it the third-highest applicant. However, 18% of these applications were turned down.

Germany’s Low Rejection Rate:

On the other hand, Indian travelers had the least trouble getting into Germany. Only eight out of 6,345 applications for Schengen visas were turned down by the consulate in Bengaluru. Only one and two applications were turned down at the consulates in Kolkata and Chennai, respectively.

The rejection rates for Italy and Hungary were 11.5% and 12.1%, respectively. This means that Italy and Hungary had relatively better acceptance rates. Italy turned down 794 of the 6,909 visa requests, while Hungary turned down 1,098 of the 9,046 requests.

Overall Schengen Visa Statistics

In 2022, 7,572,755 short-term visa applications were sent to Schengen visa offices around the world. This is more than in either of the two previous years. But this number is still 55% less than how many visas were processed in 2019, before the pandemic.

Top Applicants by Country

Turkey was in first place with 778,409 applications, and Russia was in second place with 687,239 applications. With 671,928 bids, India was in third place. If you compare these numbers to 2019, Russia, China, and India were the top three places where people wanted to get Schengen visas.

Understanding the Schengen Area

The Schengen area is the world’s biggest free travel zone. It is made up of 26 countries, including 22 EU states, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland. With this plan, people can cross countries without having to show a passport, ID card, or visa. About 3.5 million people cross internal Schengen lines every day, and about 1.7 million people live in one Schengen country and work in another.

Croatia’s Inclusion in the Schengen Zone

Croatia is the most recent country to join the Schengen zone. As of January 1, 2023, people can now enter the country with a Schengen visa.
