POSITION: Control and Automation Specialist

CCBA is Africa’s market leader in the non-alcoholic ready-to-drink (NARTD) category. CCBA has a significant presence in Africa, with over 14 000 employees across Africa and approximately 7 000 in South Africa.
Key Purpose Statement
The primary responsibility of the Control and Automation Specialist is to restore the plant and associated devices to their original installation state. In doing so, it must ensure that plant availability and product quality are maintained at the lowest possible cost while maintaining high standards. He or she would also be expected to give continual improvement initiatives that would allow for more cost-effective manufacturing in a highly competitive market. The function also requires him or her to provide coaching within his or her field of expertise in order to help others grow their technical skills.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Operational support
- Provide professional assistance to shift-based teams during operations. This will include both standby and day shift assistance.
- When required, act as a functional expert in problem-solving. This must be done in support of the process artisan.
- Provide guidance and advice to shift-based teams on machine operation, fault detection, and appropriate reactions to machine failure modes. Provide coaching, mentoring, and information transfer about machine operation to shift-based teams.
Planned maintenance
- Participate in maintenance planning meetings, making suggestions and clarifying work requirements.
- Work should be completed during the planned maintenance window, in accordance with the Planner’s planned maintenance schedule.
- If scheduled work cannot be accomplished, provide feedback to the Maintenance Planner for direction. This could include postponing the task or prioritizing outstanding work.
Routine maintenance.
- Perform routine maintenance procedures in accordance with the maintenance schedule.
- Where problems are discovered during routine maintenance, they must be resolved using the proper problem-solving approaches.
- Carry out condition monitoring operations assigned to the technician in accordance with the CM schedule.
Running Repairs
- Participate in running repairs to plant and equipment, or assist shift craftsmen in carrying out repairs.
- When performing repairs, evaluate the situation and choose a course of action.
- Solicits external professional assistance when needed, such as OEMs (as agreed upon with the Packaging Engineer).
Problem-solving
- Use the appropriate problem-solving approaches to resolve challenges.
- Solicit more resources to assist in problem resolution, or refer to the Packaging Engineer for guidance.
Housekeeping and Safety
- Always operate safely, identifying and highlighting harmful work habits so that they can be remedied.
- Carry out tasks in accordance with work instructions and CCBA policies and procedures.
- Carry out housekeeping tasks and follow 5S principles while performing their duties.
Skills, Experience, and Education
Qualifications
- N6, with Trade Test (Millwright)
- National Higher Diploma/Bachelors Degree/Masters Degree (electronic / industrial) is an extra advantage.
- 5 years of work experience (FMCG is an extra benefit).
- PLC programming software training.
- HMI development and programming software training.
- Microsoft packages require high levels of computer literacy.
- SAP experience.
