POSITION: Accountant III 

This career expert serves as Compassion’s key financial liaison to the local church, interacting with internal and external clients throughout the organization to answer financial questions and provide accounting assistance. This position plays an important role in the preparation of financial statements and the creation of new reports in response to current business requirements.

As a seasoned professional, the accountant conducts accounting research and analysis, reviews and interprets historical transactional activity, and plays an important role in the month-end and year-end close processes, which include preparing or reviewing account reconciliations. At this level, the incumbent is generally proficient in many finance disciplines and may be asked to coach or supervise the work of junior accounting professionals.

Responsibilities

  • Acts as an advocate to increase awareness of children’s needs. Commits to and prioritizes child protection in all ministry decisions, tasks, and activities. Meets all the behavioral expectations outlined in Compassion’s Statement of Commitment to Child
  • Protection and Code of Conduct. Reports any concerns about child abuse, neglect, or exploitation through Compassion’s internal reporting mechanism, and provides appropriate assistance for responses to situations that occur.
  • Uses independent judgment to assist internal customers by answering financial reporting issues, explaining accounting principles, advising on transaction recording, and informing others about financial policies and processes. Partners in resolving procedural and technological challenges.
  • Serves as a subject-matter expert for the organization’s financial general ledger system, which includes the chart of accounts, functional allocation, fund balances, segments, and other system features.
  • As the principal contact, this Accountant is responsible for cultivating relationships with local Partnership Facilitators, church partners, and denominational officials based on mutual respect, trust, and service, which strengthens church ministry. He or she is responsible for supporting partner relationships in financial and accounting matters; bringing a developmental mindset to financial aspects of the partnership, including mobilizing staff and other resources to support the church; and contributing significantly to the dissemination of financial and accounting knowledge and best practices.
  • At this level, the incumbent typically performs projects solo or participates as a team member for significant, complex, or worldwide efforts.
  • Attends training and/or uses other means to maintain a level of knowledge and/or certification adequate to carry out all the duties of this position.
  • Takes advantage of relevant chances to educate other team members and internal clients about accounting concepts and their organizational applications.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in accounting or a comparable subject.

Experience

Seven years of relevant experience in this or a similar sector.

  • Advanced comprehension of accounting principles and standards.
  • Ability to assist customers with discretion and ingenuity by addressing inquiries about the internal control structure and financial reporting, providing insight into and advice on effective transaction recording, and enlightening others about best practices for financial policies and processes.
  • Capable of regularly addressing fundamental accounting and finance problems.
  • Demonstrates a personal commitment to serving, respecting, and empowering the church following the principles expressed in Compassion’s ministry philosophy.
  • Possesses a growth attitude in financial matters.
  • Capability to form collaborations with church financial executives to reflect good internal control processes and proper money usage.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively both inside and externally
  • Ability to display servant leadership and live out Compassion’s Partnership Principles when supporting Frontline Church Partners.
  • Ability to network with other ministries and groups.
  • Ability to communicate (verbal and written) clearly and effectively.
  • Fluent in English with licenses and certifications.
  • A national or internationally recognized organization’s certification in a connected field.
  • Experience and education listed above can be replaced with equivalent education, training, or certification.

Office: Standard Office Environment

Physical demands: Sitting, standing, and/or walking for up to 8 hours daily

Travel requirements: May be necessary to travel up to 60% of the typical schedule.
