Canada Express Entry NOC: Does Work Experience Affect My CRS Score?

The National Occupation Classification 2021 (NOC 2021) code that is associated with a candidate’s previous employment does not have any impact on their CRS score unless the candidate has confirmed that they will have employment waiting for them in Canada.

Furthermore, NOC codes are still very important in the bigger picture of Express Entry, especially when it comes to category-based draws and Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs).

Information Relating to the CRS Scores:

The federal government of Canada ranks applicants for each of the three distinct Express Entry programs using CRS scores. The Canadian Experience Class (CEC), the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP), and the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP) are the three programs that fall under this category.

Candidates are ranked by their scores during the standard draws that are conducted by Express Entry. Invitations to Apply (ITAs) for permanent residency (PR) in Canada are sent out to those who receive a score that is higher than the minimum required for that particular draw. To put it another way, applicants who are awarded an ITA are those who have achieved a score that is superior to the score that is necessary as a minimum. To be more specific, the Government of Canada indicates, within the Comprehensive Ranking System’s Additional Points section (Category D), that candidates for Express Entry have the opportunity to receive either 50 or 200 additional CRS points for “Arranged Employment.” Major Group 00* of the NOC 2021 gives candidates an additional 200 points toward their CRS score if they already had a job offer before moving to Canada. Candidates who have a qualifying employment offer in any occupation falling within NOC TEER 0 (other than Major Group 00), 1, 2, or 3 are awarded an additional 50 CRS points.

The additional Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) points associated to a candidate’s particular National Occupation Classification (NOC) can have a considerable impact on the candidate’s probability of being selected for immigration to Canada through the ordinary Express Entry drawings. This is the case in both of these cases.

NOC Codes and Category-Based Express Entry Draws

The government of Canada grants precedence in the context of NOC codes and category-based Express Entry Draws to applicants who have recent job experience in specific high-demand areas. These are the industries of agriculture and agri-food, transportation, healthcare, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), and trade. The labor market in Canada is comprised of a variety of subsectors, and some of these industries are fundamental to its functioning.

Because each qualified occupation that falls into one of these five high-demand categories has its own unique, one-of-a-kind NOC code, the NOC codes play a significant role in the category-based draws that decide winners. These draws are conducted to award the prizes. Therefore, individuals who have recent work experience in an occupation that falls inside a specific NOC code may qualify for immigration to Canada through category-based draws, in addition to their typical eligibility for Express Entry. This is in addition to the fact that these people already meet the requirements for Express Entry acceptance. Immigrating to Canada through this route often results in favorable outcomes. This strategy is advantageous to Canada because it assists the country in resolving important shortages in its labor force by bringing in people who are competent in the fields that are being targeted.
