Applying for Canadian PR if the CRS score changes after receiving an ITA
This article discusses the possibility of asking for PR if the CRS score changes after receiving an ITA. Typically, Express Entry candidates have two alternatives if their Comprehensive Ranking System score changes after receiving an ITA. They can choose to withdraw their ITA or file their PR application.
Individuals can apply for PR in Canada through the Express Entry system only after receiving an ITA from IRCC during an Express Entry draw. The Express Entry system processes applications submitted under the Federal Skilled Worker Programme, the FSTP, and the Canadian Experience Class.
An Express Entry candidate’s status changes to “applicant” after receiving an invitation, and the immigration service gives them 60 days to submit the APR.
About the Comprehensive Ranking System
The CRS ranks qualified individuals for admission to Canada via Express Entry according to the following components:
- core human capital factors;
- accompanying spouse or common-law factors;
- skill transferability factors; and
- factors relating to a provincial nomination, a qualifying offer of arranged employment, Canadian study experience, a sibling in Canada, and/or French language ability.
The Comprehensive Ranking System offers a total of 1,200 points. Candidates without an accompanying spouse or common-law partner have the following options:
- You can earn up to 500 points for core human capital factors,
- 100 points for skill transferability factors,
- 600 points for a provincial nomination, or
- 200 points for a qualifying offer of employment.
- You can also earn up to 30 points for Canadian study experience,
- 50 points for French language ability, and
- 15 points for a sibling in Canada.
Candidates with an accompanying spouse or common-law partner have the following:
- The major applicant can receive up to 460 points for core human capital criteria,
- Their spouse or common-law partner can earn up to 40 points.
- There are 600 points available for provincial nominations,
- up to 200 points for eligible offers of employment, and
- up to 30 points for Canadian study experience.
- There are up to 50 points for French language skill mixed with English language aptitude, and
- a maximum of 15 points for a sibling in Canada (one sibling per application and accompanying spouse/common-law partner is considered).
What happens if the CRS score changes after receiving an ITA?
In some situations, a significant change may affect a candidate’s eligibility for the ITA received from IRCC. The influence could be beneficial or bad.
Furthermore, IRCC clarifies that if an applicant discovers that the scenario or profile information for which they acquired an ITA is incorrect, they will have two options.
However, before choosing between the two possibilities, candidates must check that their CRS score has been recalculated to reflect their altered circumstances.
Refusing the ITA.
Express Entry candidates who are likely to have a negative impact on their CRS score as a result of the change in their circumstances should refuse to accept their ITA. This is how the IRCC guides candidates. Refusing the ITA is the primary means by which they can double-check the information on their Express Entry profile.
If a change in circumstance has a negative impact, it suggests that the candidate’s ability to meet the minimal eligibility conditions is jeopardised. This could also signal that a candidate’s CRS score is reduced upon recalculation.
Applying for PR if your CRS score changes after receiving an ITA.
Candidates who experience a change in their status but do not wish to refuse their ITA may still submit an Application for Permanent Residence. However, if they choose to submit their APR to IRCC, they must note the change in circumstances in their application.
This means that a candidate must include the appropriate revisions when submitting an APR, whether the change is negative or positive.
Changes that may affect a candidate’s CRS score.
A change in circumstances can alter a candidate’s CRS scores in a variety of ways. The applicant may observe a higher CRS score in the following conditions:
- If an applicant completes a higher degree of education.
- Meet the Canadian work experience requirement for one additional year.
- Obtain a qualifying certificate.
- Improve their language exam scores.
Alternatively, an applicant’s CRS score may decrease under the following circumstances:
- After their initial results expire, they repeat the language exam, but this time they receive lower scores.
- Loss of a qualifying work offer.
Furthermore, adding a spouse or common-law partner to an Express Entry application may improve or lower an applicant’s score. This addition may have an adverse or beneficial effect on the primary applicant’s CRS score. This is because the score may increase or decrease depending on the spouse or partner’s human capital components.
However, there is one such modification that will not negatively impact applicants. This means that if their CRS score changes after receiving an ITA and their birthday occurs after receiving the ITA, the applicant will not suffer any negative consequences. Age is an important consideration for any applicant when calculating their CRS score. However, IRCC exempts applicants from losing any CRS points in the aforementioned scenario.
Refusing to accept the ITA from IRCC.
If an application for Express Entry chooses to decline an invitation to apply (ITA), they will revert to the “candidate” status. This indicates that the candidate’s profile will be sent back to the pool of candidates chosen for Express Entry. Additionally, it will continue to be included in the pool for the duration of the validity of the profile. In the event that a candidate’s profile is returned to the pool, the candidate is given the opportunity to modify the relevant information contained within their profile. Candidates who continue to satisfy the minimum qualifying standards will continue to be considered for inclusion in subsequent Express Entry lotteries.
