This department oversees the efficient operation of and increases efficiencies in Nutrition operations. This includes commissary operations, food, and other supplies. It develops and
implements nutritional programs and standards for various species under the guidance of the Head Nutritionist in collaboration with the Veterinary doctor.

POSITION: Nutrition Supervisor

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• With the support of Veterinary and Animal Care staff, monitor the condition of the entire animal collection with respect to nutritional status and health.
• Collect data on diet consumption, diet formulation, and implementation with consideration for nutritional adequacy, health, environmental enrichment, and training.
• Assist in formulating diets and rations to maximize growth, reproduction, health, and/or performance.
• Assess the nutritional and energy requirements of an animal-based upon its physical condition and type of physical activity (including performance, reproduction, lactation, or nutritional deficiencies).
• Assists in assessing the body condition of exotic and domestic animals.
• Maintains diet records for all species.
• Assist in the development of protocols related to nutrition and commissary operations.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

• Comfortable with the application of basic nutrition principles of diet formulation, recipe calculation and evaluation, software, and calculations – nutrition software.
• Good ability and comfort with computer software – specifically, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
• Knowledge of inventory control and management.
• Thorough knowledge of dietary requirements and their effects on health.
• Understanding of food enrichment and incorporation into diets.
• Sound administrative and time management skills.
• Well-developed interpersonal skills.
• Ability to get along with diverse groups.
• Tactful, mature, and teachable.Ability to exercise sound judgment in emergency situations and to respond with the appropriate action.
• Ability to compose technical and popular reports.
• Ability to interact courteously and respectfully with managers, supervisors, fellow employees, volunteers, visitors, and the general public.
• The ability to work with minimal supervision must be self-directed.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

• A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science, Food and nutrition, animal nutrition, or a related science field is required.
• A comparable combination of education, experience, or training that would provide the level of knowledge, skills, and ability required may qualify individuals.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

• Professional experience in the nutrition-related field, including research, laboratory, diet formulation, and or recipe calculation desirable.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

• Ability to work behind a computer for long periods.
• Ability to traverse company grounds for field observations and respond to emergencies.
• Ability to drive.
• Ability to publicly address audiences of varying sizes
• Must be physically able to exert force on a regular basis to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.
• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, and crouch.
• The employee will be exposed frequently to outside, potentially adverse, weather conditions, biting insects, and reptiles.
• The employee will be regularly exposed to working in the bush and exposed to food dust.
• Ability to safely and efficiently operate all specialized food preparation and other equipment used to move and lift supplies and foods including grinders, blenders, cutters, pelletizers, and others.
• Ability to exercise safe work habits in the proximity of potentially dangerous animals and equipment.
• Risk exposure to fairly predictable and controllable hazards associated with wild animals and zoonotic diseases.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

• Available to work out of regular working schedules, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays, as assigned.
