Students interested in pursuing Master’s or Ph.D. level studies at Amsterdam UMC may apply for MD/Ph.D. Scholarships (AMC/UvA) 2023–24, Amsterdam, Netherlands.
The scholarship program’s background
The MD/Ph.D. scholarship program, which is only open to AMC/UvA students, combines a medical master’s degree with Ph.D. research. With this program, students can pursue their Master’s and Doctorate degrees at the same time, allowing them to finish both in less time.
Students pursuing MDs and PhDs at AMC/UvA and VUmc/VU have different study schedules. The AMC/UvA program is exclusively offered as a scholarship for AMC/UvA students, whereas VUmc/VU offers a distinct MD/Ph.D. program. Both programs offer a combination of Master’s and PhD courses.
The start and finish dates for Master’s Phases 1 & 2 and 3 are determined by AMC Onderwijssupport. The Master’s degree curriculum for MD/Ph.D. candidates is tailored to facilitate a blend of education and research. The MD/Ph.D. program’s other requirements, however, are adaptable. MD/Ph.D. candidates must inform AMC Onderwijsadministratie of their intended “semi-arts” internship (SAS) start date eight months in advance because internships may need to be scheduled up to five years in advance.
The Teaching and Examination Regulations (OER) of the program, as well as the Teaching Regulations for MD/Ph.D. students, apply to MD/Ph.D. students during their clinical internships. These students have the same rights and obligations as other Master’s degree students.

Benefits of a scholarship
- The MD/Ph.D. scholarship covers the cost of an MD/Ph.D. student’s salary for a duration of 2.5 years in addition to a small amount of additional research expenses.
- The MD/Ph.D. student and the Ph.D. supervisor will need to find extra funding from other sources if the project’s overall cost is projected to be more than this sum.
- Each year, there are four MD/Ph.D. scholarships that are entirely financed by the AMC. The department is required to match the remuneration for the remaining months of research work. The AMC provides financing for two years (half the award for an AMC flexible OiO job).
- A formal matching declaration that has been signed by the department head and the division manager is required before the MD/Ph.D. Scholarships can be awarded.
It is also feasible to submit an application with full departmental or outside funding. The selection process and standards used for these applications are the same. Additionally, there are only four MD/Ph.D. positions that are externally funded.

Eligibility Requirements
Candidates for the MD/Ph.D. program must have a history that is full of scientific promise, as shown by their shown research accomplishments on their resume, grade list, and motivational letter.
A recommendation letter from an AMC principal investigator is also required, as are extracurricular research projects conducted at the AMC or one of its partner research institutions. Candidates must also have received top grades for their bachelor’s-level coursework and avoided unneeded study breaks.
The following AMC students are qualified for the MD/Ph.D. program in 2023:
- Began the Bachelor of Science in Medicine program in the 2020–2021 academic year;
- Started early and avoided needless study delays;
- began the premaster program in the summer of 2022, and
- have yet to begin their clinical internship rotations and won’t begin them until March 1, 2024, respectively.
NOTE: Before January 1st, 2024, will get a Bachelor’s or Premaster’s degree in medicine.

Application Methodology:
The following records must be submitted in the following sequence to be considered for an MD/Ph.D. scholarship:
- a letter outlining your motivations for applying and how you meet the criteria;
- an application for a research proposal using the usual form (this will be reissued once the new deadline has been announced):

- your curriculum vitae, which should include a list of publications as well as the course transcript for your Bachelor’s degree or equivalent (cijferlijst) given by the faculty-student administration;
- written assurance that the person who will serve as your Ph.D. supervisor (promotor) is willing to do so.
- Your desired Ph.D. supervisor can help you draft the study proposal, but they both must sign it for it to be approved. The application form should include a description of your research project, the name of the AMC department where you wish to work, the name of your Ph.D. advisor, and a budget with the estimated total costs of your research (contact AMR BV for assistance and instructions), including the breakdown of how much will be covered by the scholarship and how much will come from other sources, such as the department or outside funding).
