POSITION: Maternity Cover – Communication and Media Consultant

Purpose
The goal of this role/assignment is to lead WaterAid Ghana’s (WAG) communication strategy, ensuring that the organization remains actively engaged with varied stakeholders at the local, national, and global levels. This role strives to increase WAG’s visibility and influence across many platforms by developing, organizing, and executing complete communication efforts.
It acts as a vital link, encouraging synergy and collaboration to promote WAG’s overarching goals in service delivery, research, advocacy, and fundraising. Furthermore, the role is critical for managing and improving social media outreach, increasing WaterAid Ghana’s visibility, and molding public understanding of WASH concerns. Strategic media engagements and content production help to promote WAG as a thought leader in the WASH sector.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct digital advocacy sessions.
- Increase WAG visibility (particularly with social media)
- Create a quarterly newsletter titled Dawuro.
- Organize two media/press tours of selected WAG project sites.
- Publish quarterly blog postings about creative techniques and successes that demonstrate the effectiveness of WAG initiatives.
- Daily media monitoring and analysis of WASH concerns.
- Strengthen WAG’s ties with the Ghana WASH Journalist Network (GWJN).
- Work closely with the Funds Manager to update and create project summary papers.
Required Skill or Experience
Essential Skills
- Qualifications and experience: At least a master’s degree in a relevant subject, ideally media communications. A minimum of five years of experience working in communications and media, including the creation of a wide range of content and materials for various media. INGO work experience is preferable.
- Communication and ICT Skills: Demonstrate good communication and presentation skills to ensure that ideas and proposals are conveyed clearly and compellingly. Computer-literate (word processing and spreadsheet applications, including PowerPoint).
- Policy, Advocacy, and Influencing: Experience in influencing policy development and reform through knowledge and evidence generation, assessing and communicating the potential impact of new evidence or policy on WASH improvements, working with a range of stakeholders in other sectors/departments e.g. overall town/district planning department, health, education, and environment to influence and drive policy change, incorporating human rights principles of participation and equity an
- Relationship-building, partnering, and stakeholder engagement: Civil society networking, coalition building, and consortium partner engagement with NGOs, public, private, and non-governmental organizations, media, youth, women’s, and human rights groups, as well as strong partnerships and collaborations with institutions, particularly government, CSOs, community groups/representatives, media, and academic institutions. Internal stakeholder involvement within CPs’ policy/advocacy and program teams.
- Learning, Research, and Evidence Creation: The ability to apply evidence and knowledge gained from monitoring, evaluation, and research to inform communication and media material.
- Eligibility and WaterAid Knowledge: Eligibility to work in Ghana is required, and awareness of the WaterAid Program’s goals and safeguarding principles is advantageous.
- Proactive and Results-Oriented: Address difficulties head-on, demonstrate resourcefulness, and maintain a solutions-oriented and results-focused approach.
- Language and Literacy: Fluent in English (both spoken and written); fluency in Twi and/or FraFra is an added bonus.
Desirable Skills
- Knowledge of International Development and Fundraising
- Worked in a communication and/or media function for an international organization.
- Ability to facilitate and train others.
- Experience with media as an influencing tool.
- Interest and experience in fundraising.
- Experience administering intranet content.
- Public speaking and communication skills for both professionals and lay audiences.
