Underground Mining Alliance Ltd. (“UMA”) is a joint venture between African Underground Mining Services Limited (AUMS) and Rocksure International that conducts underground development and production for the AngloGold Ashanti (Obuasi) Mine.
Job Description
UMA is looking to hire a competent, experienced, and driven Radio Communications Technician to join our Electrical Team. This is a fixed-term position in Obuasi with a competitive work schedule at the company’s Obuasi location. The remuneration package for the suitable people comprises an excellent salary as well as performance-based incentives.

The successful candidate will be in charge of installing, maintaining, and repairing radio communication systems and mining equipment under the supervision of the Electrical Foreman. The function ensures that operational teams communicate seamlessly in order to promote safety, efficiency, and collaboration on-site.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Install, install, and test radio communication equipment, such as handheld radios, base stations, repeaters, antennas, and other systems.
- Perform preventative maintenance and routine checks on radio communication equipment to guarantee optimal performance.
- Issues with radio communication equipment should be diagnosed and resolved promptly.
- Replace or repair damaged components to reduce downtime.
- Communication systems’ firmware and software should be updated as necessary.
- Monitor radio frequency (RF) networks for interference and guarantee regulatory compliance.
- Keep accurate records of equipment inventories, repairs, and maintenance schedules.
- Provide training and technical support to radio communication equipment users.
- To extend the life of communication devices, use them properly and handle them carefully.
- When working with communication equipment, follow all safety protocols and requirements.
- Maintain compliance with both local and international communication standards.
- Complete numerous daily, weekly, and monthly reports as needed.
- To avoid accidents, follow all mining safety rules and use suitable personal protective equipment (PPE), as well as safety standards.
- Participate in safety meetings and contribute to a safe workplace.
- Be open to learning new approaches, and willing to share your skills and information with coworkers.
- Maintain excellent levels of housekeeping in the shop and on-job locations.
Required Skill or Experience
- B.Sc. in Electrical/Electronic Engineering or Telecommunications Engineering from a recognized University with a minimum of 5 years experience working in a Hard Rock Underground Mine, or Diploma in Electrical/Electronic or Telecommunication Engineering with a minimum of 10 years experience working in a Hard Rock Underground Mine.
- Must have a valid Ghanaian driving and operating license (C & E Classes) and the ability to operate a manual SUV underground.
- Proven competence in radio communication systems, VHF/UHF radios, and RF equipment.
- Ability to influence and engage with operational and non-operational staff and contractors, with strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Must be familiar with the Mining Act and relevant laws of the Republic of Ghana.
- Experience with signal analysis tools and diagnostic equipment.
- The ability to read and understand technical documents and diagrams.
- Capable of swiftly learning new jobs and training, coaching, and mentoring crew members.
- Strong sense of urgency and outcome-focused
- Requirements include cross-cultural experience and the ability to work both day and night.
