Underground Mining Alliance Ltd. (“UMA”) is a joint venture between African Underground Mining Services Limited (AUMS) and Rocksure International that conducts underground development and production for the AngloGold Ashanti (Obuasi) Mine.

Job Description

UMA is looking to hire a qualified, experienced, and motivated Electrician – Instrumentation to join our Electrical Team. This is a fixed-term position in Obuasi with a competitive work schedule at the company’s Obuasi location. The successful candidate will report to the Electrical Foreman and be responsible for their own and their coworkers’ safety while maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing all electrical systems and equipment underground. The incumbent will prioritize compliance to ensure that all individuals, including employees and subcontractors, have the necessary skills to perform safely and efficiently.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Perform safe and effective preventative maintenance, installation, and troubleshooting of motors and controls, process controls, and instruments.
  • Performs preventative and corrective maintenance of underground fixed plant instruments, controls, and electrical systems; disassembles and replaces old or broken components; and realigns equipment.
  • Uses process calibrators and controllers to configure, program, calibrate, and start plant instrumentation and control systems.
  • Inspects electrical equipment, electronic systems, and telemetry equipment to ensure appropriate operation.
  • Upgrades are recommended for instrumentation and control systems.
  • Program, troubleshoot, and repair electrical equipment.
  • Perform scheduled electrical servicing in line with manufacturer specifications and the Electrical Code, while adhering to corporate and client standard operating procedures and safety regulations.
  • Identify and manage the resources needed for each project, such as tools and other equipment, additional personnel, or assistance, to ensure that jobs are completed efficiently and on schedule, maximizing production.
  • Complete all service sheets and document any additional repairs made on each task.
  • Diagnose and predict any problems or probable failures, and make proposals for remedies
  • Read and understand service and replacement parts manuals.
  • Perform frequent checks of systems and required tools.
  • Be open to learning new approaches, and willing to share your skills and information with coworkers.
  • Maintain excellent levels of housekeeping in the shop and on-job locations.

Required Skill or Experience

  • BSc. in Electrical/Electronic Engineering from a recognized University with a minimum of 5 years’ experience working in a Hard Rock Underground Mines, or Diploma in Electrical/Electronic Engineering with a minimum of 10 years’ experience working in a Hard Rock Underground Mine.
  • Must understand the Mining Act and relevant Republic of Ghana laws.
  • Must have a valid Ghanaian driving and operating license (C & E Classes) and the ability to operate a manual SUV underground.
  • Ability to influence and engage with operational and non-operational staff and contractors, with strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Must have good work ethics and be able to speak respectfully with coworkers.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate in a team setting with leadership skills.
  • Excellent organizational, planning, and time management skills, as well as analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Capable of swiftly learning new jobs and training, coaching, and mentoring crew members.
  • Ability to work under pressure and have the desire to succeed.
  • A high emphasis on safety and hazard identification.
  • Strong sense of urgency and outcome-focused
  • Requirements include cross-cultural experience and the ability to work both day and night.
