Exciting Career Opportunity at Rainforest Builder

POSITION: Carbon Data Scientist

About the Rainforest Builder:

Rainforest Builder is an integrated nature technology firm that creates and deploys intellectual property to restore tropical forests on a landscape scale. We are on a mission to restore one million hectares of rainforest globally, sequestering hundreds of millions of tonnes of CO2, restoring local biodiversity, and providing equitable economic prosperity to our host communities.

Moreover, We combine forestry sector expertise with cutting-edge restoration science and technology to provide high-quality carbon removal and biodiversity credits at scale. We recruit, finance, and manage tropical forest restoration projects for some of the world’s most prominent investors. Our first two nations of operation are Ghana and Sierra Leone.

What makes us different:

Science-driven – we are developing global-leading intellectual property in community-based rainforest restoration, using constant R&D in ecological and social techniques, including big data analytics, to drive continuous improvements in the quality and durability of the projects we carry out.

Biodiversity is at the heart of our work; we specialize in restoring degraded land to tropical forests with indigenous species, resulting in win-wins for large-scale carbon sequestration and biodiversity conservation. We measure, quantify, and verify our biodiversity and carbon footprint.

Pure-play restoration forestry teams – we execute and manage projects directly with our specialized teams on the ground, allowing us to establish long-term community connections and directly ensure project quality over 30 years. We don’t believe long-term carbon programs can be outsourced.

Deep forestry expertise – by collaborating with big FSC-certified forestry firms, we bring decades of commercial forestry experience and operational processes to our projects, which include nursery management, land preparation, and fire prevention.

Scale – We believe that restoration projects should be professionalised and scaled up significantly by bringing together the best specialists from around the world.

Your role:

As a Rainforest Builder data scientist, you will be responsible for developing and monitoring large-scale tropical forest restoration programs. You will be part of a dynamic science team that develops and applies cutting-edge data science solutions to growing difficulties in this field.

Moreover, You will contribute to the development of Machine Learning approaches that will support the monitoring of our project areas, as well as the creation and maintenance of Rainforest Builder’s core data streams and tools that will take data from a variety of data sources (including remote sensing and geospatial data) and provide solutions to new business challenges. You will produce clean and scalable code that adheres to software development best practices to create solutions that enable project monitoring and help Rainforest Builder achieve its objectives.

What are we looking for?

This is a group-wide function, and we are searching for someone ambitious and driven to produce long-term benefits for climate, biodiversity, and local populations through unprecedented tropical forest restoration.

The candidate will have a graduate degree (or similar experience) in computer science, statistics, or another quantitative field and be able to show examples of coding projects ranging from data handling and processing to data analysis and visualisation. Fluency in R or Python is necessary, as is familiarity with Git or other version control tools. Working with machine learning algorithms, handling vast amounts of geographical data, and having knowledge of AWS are all ideal. You will be practical and versatile, with a passion for problem-solving and a strong ability to articulate solutions and collaborate on data science assignments while adhering to software development best practices.

Your main responsibilities:

  • Contribute to developing and maintaining the RB codebase for data processing and analytics.
  • Using cutting-edge machine learning techniques, extract insights from geospatial and remote sensing data.
  • Data cleaning entails working with a variety of structured and unstructured data to create clean, neat, and well-documented data products.
  • Create high-quality data visualisations to share insights internally and publicly.

Essential qualifications

  • Graduate-level training (or similar experience) in computer science, statistics, or other quantitative sciences.
  • Fluent in R or Python, as well as expertise with Git or other version control software.
  • Capable of providing examples of coding projects that require considerable data handling while adhering to software development best practices.
  • Fluency in English (knowledge of other languages commonly spoken in tropical West Africa is desirable).

Desirable Qualifications

  • Experience in machine learning algorithms, particularly when applied to geographical (including remote sensing) data.
  • Experience deploying code to AWS.
  • Experience using Shiny to create dashboards.
  • Excellent interpersonal and cross-cultural communication abilities, as well as the ability to work closely on data science projects and convey findings to a broad audience.
  • Commitment to fairness, diversity, and inclusion in the workplace and research setting.
