UNICEF Ghana Job Recruitment for June 2024

POSITION: National Intern – Water Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH)

UNICEF has been the premier child rights organization and a valued partner in preserving and enhancing children’s lives.

In Ghana, UNICEF works with the government and other partners to campaign for the protection of children’s rights, fair access to quality social services, and expanding children’s opportunities to attain their full potential.

With offices in Accra and Tamale, the UNICEF team works to achieve achievements in important program areas. The main goal is for every kid to survive and develop, to live in a safe and clean environment, to study, to be free of abuse and exploitation, and to have an equal opportunity in life. The present Country Programme of Cooperation is in line with government goals, the UN Sustainable Development Partnership (UNSDP), and Key Results for Children (KRCs) in the West and Central African Region (immunization, nutrition, learning outcomes, violence prevention, and open defecation). UNICEF’s major tactics are evidence-based advocacy, system strengthening, integrated programming across sectors, emergency preparedness and response, and innovation.

How can you make a difference?

Achieving SDG target 6.2, guaranteeing access to adequate and equitable sanitation and hygiene for everyone and eliminating open defecation by 2030, remains a serious worldwide challenge, particularly for the most vulnerable and disadvantaged children. In Ghana, only one in every four households has access to an improved and exclusively utilized toilet facility, with roughly 17% still practicing open defecation.

UNICEF has been working with Ghana’s Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources (MSWR) and other stakeholders in the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) sector to accelerate progress toward SDG 6.2. UNICEF is now working with six (6) Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to demonstrate innovative sanitation initiatives and methods aimed at accelerating progress toward the SDG targets. One such intervention is the Sanitation and Housing Integration Programme for Scale (SHIP4S), which seeks to build a societal norm in which toilets are built into dwellings and no house exists without one.

The plan aims to achieve its goals by collaborating with building construction craftspeople, traditional and religious leaders, and establishing or improving legal norms and enforcement regimes in MMDAs. The outcomes of the interventions in these six MMDAs will be documented and widely communicated across the sector, with government and sector actors implementing strategies to assist their scaling up and replication.

The primary goal of this internship is to remotely monitor MMDA-level implementation, receive MMDA reports, and compile them into consolidated programme reports. The intern will also help document field lessons and success stories.

Key tasks:

  • Conduct remote weekly follow-up on MMDA level activity implementation and provide summary implementation progress updates.
  • Help organize monthly online review meetings with MMDAs and submit summary implementation success reports.
  • Assist with the planning of in-person workshops including project MMDAs and all accompanying documentation, including the updating of relevant reporting formats.
  • Facilitate the documentation of field-level success stories and lessons learned for knowledge management.

Key deliverables:

  • Consolidated weekly and monthly program/activity reports from all implementing MMDAs.
  • Monthly action points tracker for online review meetings and in-person workshops.
  • Drafted field-level stories for at least two MMDAs.
