Google Ph.D. Fellowship Program with Full Funding

Students who get Google Ph.D. Fellowships are part of a select group that Google researchers and their schools identify as some of the brightest young academics in the world. Students who exhibit the potential for the following fields of research are given fellowships:

  • Algorithms, Optimizations, and Markets
  • Computational Neural and Cognitive Sciences
  • Health Research
  • Human-Computer Interaction
  • Machine Learning
  • Machine Perception, Speech Technology, and Computer Vision
  • Mobile Computing
  • Natural Language Processing (including Information Retrieval and Extraction)
  • Privacy and Security
  • Programming Languages and Software Engineering
  • Quantum Computing
  • Recommender Systems
  • Structured Data and Database Management
  • Systems and Networking

The Fully Supported Google Ph.D. Fellowship Program 2022 is open to students enrolled in Fellowship-level programs at universities in Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Canada, Africa, and India.

Eligibility Requirements

Students from Australia, New Zealand, East Asia, Europe, the United States, and Canada were nominated.

Universities should only suggest candidates that satisfy the following criteria:

  • Ph.D. candidates who are full-time graduate students enrolled at a university in one of the aforementioned locations.
  • Graduate-level coursework completed by the start of the Fellowship’s academic award year.
  • For the duration of the Fellowship, students must continue to enroll full-time in the Ph.D. program in order to keep their awards.
  • Employees of Google, as well as their spouses, kids, and household members are not eligible.
  • Students who are already receiving financial aid from a similar industry award are ineligible. Funding from the government or nonprofit organizations is excluded.
  • Exclusively in AU/NZ: Ph.D. candidates who are still in their first or second year (no requirement for completion of graduate coursework by the academic award year).

African, Indian, and Southeast Asian direct applicants

  • Ph.D. candidates who are full-time graduate students enrolled in an African, Indian, or Southeast Asian* university.
  • Professionals and undergraduate or graduate students may apply.
  • Applicants for undergraduate and graduate programs must be enrolled full-time at an institution in Africa, India, or Southeast Asia.
  • Professionals must work for or be linked with an organization that is officially recognized in Southeast Asia, Africa, or India.
  • For these applicants, the Fellowship grant is subject to the awardee enrolling in a full-time Ph.D. program in computer science (or a related discipline) at an African, Indian, or Southeast Asian university within the calendar year following the Fellowship award, failing which the award would be forfeited.
  • The award of the Fellowship does not imply acceptance into a university’s Ph.D. program. In order to enroll for a Ph.D. at the designated institute or university, the awardee must also successfully complete the Ph.D. admissions process there.
  • The rules and regulations in effect at the institute or university where the awardee registers for the Ph.D. program will govern the grant of the fellowship.
    For the duration of the Fellowship, students must continue to enroll full-time in the Ph.D. program in order to keep their awards.
  • Employees of Google, as well as their spouses, kids, and household members are not eligible.
  • Students who are already receiving financial aid from a similar industry award are ineligible. Funding from the government or nonprofit organizations is excluded.
  • Southeast Asian nations Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam are among those that qualify for the Ph.D. Fellowship.

How To Apply

New Zealand and Australia

The university will be required to send the following documentation in a single PDF file for each student nomination:

  • Student resume with publications and website links (if available)
  • CV of the student’s principal advisor, 1 page long
  • Transcripts of one’s recent and past academic achievements
  • 2–3 letters of support from individuals who are familiar with the candidate’s work (at least one from the thesis advisor)
  • Proposal for a dissertation or research project with references (maximum 8 pages)
    Europe, North America, East Asia, and the United States
  • The university will be required to send the following documentation in a single PDF file for each student nomination:
  • The Department Chair’s signature appears on a cover page attesting that the student has met the eligibility conditions. (Read the FAQ “What are the prerequisites for students’ eligibility?”)
  • Student resume with publications and website links (if available)
  • CV of the student’s principal advisor, 1 page long
  • 2–3 letters of support from individuals who are familiar with the candidate’s work (at least one from the thesis advisor)
  • Proposal for a dissertation or research project with references (maximum 8 pages)

  • Consider your accomplishments and the lessons you took away from the experience.

However, your leadership responsibilities should not be restricted to school-related activities. For instance, do you look after your family or assist others?)

  • Transcripts of one’s most recent and earlier academic records in Southeast Asia, India, and Africa
  • To complete an application, students will require the following materials (in English only):
  • Resume of student applicant with references to publications and websites (if available)
  • Transcripts (mark sheets) that are now available for the first year or semester of the bachelor’s degree
  • Study proposal (maximum 3 pages, excluding references)
  • 2–3 letters of recommendation from individuals who are knowledgeable about the applicant’s work (at least one from the thesis advisor for current Ph.D. students)

Just For African Students

  • Résumé of the student’s Ph.D. program advisor is no longer than one page.
  • Response to the essay prompt, “What effect will receive this scholarship have on your education?” from the applicant (maximum 350 words).
  • Explain any factors that make you need a scholarship and what academic objectives this award will help you achieve.
