Types of Graduate Assistantships Available

1 . Firstly, Graduate Research Assistant (GRA)

To begin with, Graduate Research Assistant. This is a graduate assistantship available to students whose primary focus is research-related. The Graduate Research Assistant’s duties vary according to the nature of the research project in which the student participates and the source of funding.

2 . Secondly, Graduate Teach Assistant (GTA)

Also, Graduate Teach Assistant. This is for a graduate student whose main focus is assisting in a teaching program. The specific duties of a Graduate Teach Assistant vary from one program to another.

Duration Of Graduate Assistantships At University of Maryland

An assistantship appointment may be either full-time (20 hours per week) or part-time (10 hours per week). But, it can last for a total of 10 months (regular academic year) or 12 months. Ten-month appointments begin in the fall and end on June 30. Whereas, the  Twelve-month appointments generally begin either July 1 or September 1.

Who Qualifies To Apply?

  • To begin with, applicants must be Pre-Candidacy – Graduate student in good standing who lacks previous teaching or research experience.
  • Secondly, applicants must be Post-Candidacy – Graduate student in good standing who has passed the departmental preliminary exam. Additionally, applicants must have been formally admitted to candidacy for the doctoral degree.
