2023–2025 Joint Japan–World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (Fully-funded)

The Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program 2023–2025 is now accepting applications. The Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (JJ/WBGSP) helps people from certain developing countries get master’s degrees in fields related to development if they have relevant professional experience and have helped their countries develop in the past.

Depending on how much money is available, JJWBGSP gives scholarships to 45 Master’s programs at 27 universities in the United States, Europe, Africa, Oceania, and Japan. These programs are in important development fields like infrastructure management, economic policy management, and tax policy.

Scholarship Coverage

The JJ/WBGSP scholarship offers the following advantages to the recipient:

  • Airfare in economy class between your home nation and the host university at the beginning of your study program and soon after the scholarship period is over
  • Scholars will also be given a US$500 travel allowance for each trip in addition to the two-way flight transportation;
  • Tuition for your graduate program and the price of your university-provided basic health insurance.
  • During the scholarship period, a monthly stipend is given to cover all living costs, such as housing, food, and books, while the student is in school. Depending on the host nation, the allowance varies in size.

Choice Process

The JJ/WBGSP uses the following process to evaluate scholarship applications from people living in poor countries. The goal is to choose the applicants who are most likely to make a difference in the development of their countries after they finish their graduate studies.

Each eligible application is looked at by two qualified assessors, who do it separately. They then give each application a score between 1 and 10 based on four key factors and how much they depend on each other:

  • Professional Experience Quality (30% weight)
  • Professional Recommendation Quality (Weight: 30%)
  • Quality of Your Home Country Commitment (30% weight)
  • Background education level quality (10% weight)

The JJ/WBGSP Secretariat picks the finalists based on the average score of the two assessors and the following criteria:

  • Keeping the regional distribution of awards fairly diverse
  • Preserving a fair distribution of rewards by gender
  • When evaluating the employment experience and other parts of an application, unusual circumstances or hardships
  • Awards of scholarships to applicants who, other things being equal, have little recourse to funding for graduate study abroad
