SUBMIT APPLICATIONS NOW: 2023 Barcelona School of Economics Scholarships

The applications for the 2023 Barcelona School of Economics Scholarships are now open for students who are interested. Kindly follow the guidelines below to apply:

ABOUT BARCELONA SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS

The Board of Trustees approved the rebranding of the Barcelona School of Economics (abbreviated BSE) from the Barcelona Graduate School of Economics (Barcelona GSE) at its annual meeting in 2019.

This choice was made as a result of an extensive brand analysis that was conducted beginning in 2018 with the aim of developing a new brand strategy to enhance our reputation and market position globally. From the very beginning, members of the board, Scientific Council, faculty, and alumni communities were involved in the initiative.

The new name became official on September 1, 2021.

We want to be clear that the name change to the Barcelona School of Economics does not signify any significant adjustments to our organization’s goals, educational offerings, or research projects. As you read the following Q&A regarding our new name, please bear this in mind.

Why change the name now?

Historically, the word “graduate” was added to our name to make it apparent to the market that we would focus on post-graduate education. But in reality, the term “graduate” is not always connected with post-graduate study in Europe and other areas of the world today. In the increasingly crowded and competitive worldwide market for the recruitment of brilliant students, the BSE name aligns us with other economic institutions.

The BSE moniker also more truly captures our organizational development. Although post-graduate programs remain a crucial component of the Barcelona School of Economics, our program offering has grown to include summer schools, professional courses, as well as in-company training in the years since the inaugural Master’s batch (Class of 2008).

Thanks to the combined research of more than 150 BSE Affiliated Professors in our four academic units, the Barcelona School of Economics now ranks among the top economics institutions and departments in Europe and the world. We can constantly think of fresh methods to connect educational initiatives with ongoing research in our local community thanks to the moniker “BSE.”

Academic Affairs

Does this change mean that BSE will offer undergraduate programs?

There are no plans to start offering undergraduate degrees at the Barcelona School of Economics. Our two founding universities, Universitat Autnoma de Barcelona and Universitat Pompeu Fabra, are responsible for delivering those programs.

Which name will appear on the Master’s degree?

BSE Master’s degrees are still awarded jointly with our founding universities:

  • Master’s Degree in Economics and Finance: awarded jointly with UPF
  • Master’s Degree in Specialized Economic Analysis: awarded jointly with UAB and UPF
  • Master’s Degree in Data Science: awarded jointly with UAB and UPF

As in the past, the only institutional names that appear on the official diploma are those of UAB and UPF.

Which name will appear on official transcripts?

All official transcripts issued to students who graduate after the transition takes place will list “Barcelona School of Economics” as the institution’s name.

Reputation and rankings

How will the change affect name recognition of the Master’s degrees with recruiters and PhD programs?

The BSE Career Services team will make every effort to ensure a smooth transition and has already contacted all of our recruitment partners to inform them of the change.

The group will offer guidance to current and former students and alumni on how to properly mention the Barcelona School of Economics on resumes and in doctoral applications.

How will the change to BSE affect research rankings?

We will continue to appear in research rankings such as RePEc under our new name, the Barcelona School of Economics.
