Leiden University 2023 Excellence Scholarships (LexS)

Outstanding non-EEA/non-EFTA students enrolled in a full-time master’s degree program at Leiden University are eligible for the Leiden University Excellence Scholarship Programme (LExS).

Information Regarding Excellence Scholarships at Leiden University

• Host: Netherlands’ Leiden University
• Study Level: Master’s degree programs, except LLM (non-advanced) and MSc programs
• No. Scholarships Available: This depends on the amount of funding each faculty department has available.
• Eligible Candidates: Non-EEA/non-EFTA
• Application Deadline: 1 February/1 October (annual)

Eligibility:

For the Master’s degree they are looking for, students must have obtained the highest grades possible in their preceding studies. This is demonstrated by the fact that the student graduated from their prior program of study in the top 10%.

Note that this information is only provided to show the level of competition; verification of ranking is not necessary.

Candidates must hold a passport that is not issued by the EEA or EFTA* and may not be qualified for aid through the Dutch system of study grants and loans, with the exception of those applying for the LLM Advanced Studies programs or the MSc in International Relations and Diplomacy, for which there are no nationality restrictions (Studiefinanciering).

*All member states of the European Union plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland.

Scholarship Amount

The Leiden University Excellent Scholarship program presents the following three awards:

• The tuition charge of € 10.000;
• the tuition fee of € 15.000;
• the total tuition fee is less than the mandatory tuition fee.

The LExS does not offer full financial aid. Non-EEA LExS recipients still need to show ‘evidence of sufficient money’ with their applications for a student visa or a residence permit.

Application Guidelines:

If you want to get into a Master’s program at Leiden University, you must first fill out an online application. Include your motivation letter for the LExS scholarship, and in the scholarship section of your application, you must say that you are applying for the LExS scholarship.

Application Closing Date

Programs beginning in September have a deadline of 1 February, whereas those beginning in February have a deadline of 1 October.
