US to Prioritize Visas for Students
Donald Lu, the US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia, said that the Biden administration plans to process all Indian student visas before the fall term starts.
In an interview with the Press Trust of India, Lu also said that the US is giving high priority to work visas like the H-1B and L visas, which are in high demand among Indian IT experts.
Lu went on to say that wait times for US visa appointments in some consular areas in India have been cut to less than 60 days.
Record Number of Visas for India
Mr. Lu predicts the US will grant a record number of Indian visas this year. Student visas. India is the second largest source of US international students.
In India, first-time visa applicants, notably B1 (business) and B2 (tourist) applicants are concerned about high wait times.
New Visa Renewal Pilot Program
Lu also discussed renewing domestic visas for petition-based nonimmigrant workers who meet specific requirements, such as being physically present in the US. The experimental scheme will eliminate the need for applicants to travel abroad to renew their visas.
Strengthening India-US Relations
Lu said that the relationship between India and the US is significant and that it has backing from both parties in the US. He said that this was partly because there is a large Indian group in the US.
Lu also said that more than 100,000 Americans live in India and that the ties between the two countries are important, even though they are far apart and travel is expensive.
Conclusion
As the US keeps putting Indian students and IT workers at the top of the list for visas, Lu’s admission is good news for many. The move should make the relationship between the two countries stronger, and it will be good for both businesses.
