UAE Launches New Service for Renewing Emirates Passports from Abroad
Emiratis living abroad can now easily renew their IDs and Emirates ID cards in the UAE. Applicant photographs must meet strict specifications.

Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security implemented this long-awaited adjustment. It simplifies passport updates for Emiratis overseas.
Renewal process through a smart app
Applicants must apply for the contract via the authority’s smart application to avail this service. This rule restricts document viewing and renewal to authorized users.
Nasser Ahmed Al-Abdouli, Director of Customer Happiness Management at the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security, spoke to Emarat AlYoum about renewing Emirati ID cards abroad.
Al-Abdouli said the authority’s smart application is the sole way to renew. Any printing center or unlawful UAE requests from non-UAE residents would be denied.
Steps to an Easy Renewal
In an interview with ‘Noor Dubai radio, Al-Abdouli went into detail about how to update an ID card from outside the country. He said that people who live outside the UAE can easily use their cell phones to access the authority’s smart application.
Through the app, they can choose the service for renewing ID cards from outside the country, send in their application, pay the required fees, and finish the transaction without any problems.
Following rules and the official dress code
Al-Abdouli stressed how important it is, especially for citizens, to follow the rules when taking a picture for a document. It is very important to follow the authority’s rules about how to dress.
Tough Rules for Private Photos
To make sure that personal shots sent through their smart systems are accepted, the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security has set up strict rules. Among these factors are:
- Dress Code: Applicants have to wear the dress code of the United Arab Emirates.
- Coverings for the head: Coverings for the head are allowed based on customs and practices.
- Background: The background of the picture should be white.
- Shot Quality: You should give a recent, high-quality color shot that was taken within the last six months. The size should be between 35 and 40 mm.
- Position of the Head: The head should be straight and in line with the camera eye.
- Expression: In the picture, you need to have a neutral expression on your face.
- Eyes: Both eyes must be open and looking at the camera. Colored contact lenses are not allowed.
- Glasses: Glasses shouldn’t get in the way of your vision or make things look distorted.
- Image Resolution: The image resolution should be at least 600 dots per inch (dpi) and free of ink lines or wrinkles.
These rules apply to all applicants, no matter how old they are, and make sure that the photos they send meet the standards needed for recognition.
Checking information and trying not to wait
When renewing or getting a new ID, the authority tells all customers to double-check that their ID numbers and expiration dates are correct and still legal.
Before making the payment, they should also check that the information they put into the electronic form is right. This will keep their transactions from being held up.
Also, people are asked to make sure that their phone numbers, email addresses, and chosen delivery methods on the electronic form are correct.
With the start of this new service, the UAE has taken a big step toward making it easier and more convenient for Emiratis living abroad to get things done. People who want to renew their Emirates ID cards and passports while they are outside of the UAE will have an easier time doing so if they use the smart program and follow the rules.
