Concerning Virginia Wesleyan University

The Methodist clergyman Joseph Johnston first offered the idea for Virginia Wesleyan University in 1959, proposing a private, four-year institution that would be the first of its kind in South Hampton Roads. The school gained more and more support from the Methodist Church (now United Methodist) and the local business community in just two years after it was first conceived, and it also had a name and charter. Founded in 1961, Virginia Wesleyan College welcomed its first class of students in 1966.

Virginia Wesleyan College saw consistent enrollment growth, full accreditation in its first year of eligibility, and admission to the exclusive Virginia Foundation for Independent Colleges. 41 trailblazing students graduated from the College at its inaugural ceremony in May 1970. Since then, the university has expanded to 10,000 alumni and 1,600 students.

Virginia Wesleyan University offers a strong academic foundation while fostering active and productive citizens. Its roots are in the liberal arts tradition and its Methodist legacy. 2011 saw the implementation of Virginia Wesleyan’s improved curriculum model, which gives students more opportunities to learn by doing, apply theory to practice, and make connections between the classroom and the outside world.

The school divided its academic program into three schools in 2016: the Joan P. Brock School of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, the Susan S. Goode School of Arts and Humanities, and the Birdsong School of Social Science. 2016 saw the founding of University College as well as the launch of Batten Honors College. Added in 2018 was the D. Henry Watts School of Professional Studies.

Grant of permission

With effect from the beginning of the 2017–18 academic year, Virginia Wesleyan College was granted permission by the State Council of Higher Education to become Virginia Wesleyan University.

Several institutional achievements—chief among them the creation of the academic program, the establishment of Batten Honors College, the conclusion of a thorough campus master planning process, and the institution’s elevation to Level III status with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges—made this significant moment in the institution’s history possible.

The status change made it possible to offer two new graduate programs and an online adult degree program.
