Concerning University of Tennessee

The liberal arts university that is now known as the University of Tennessee Southern was established in 2021 after the institution, Martin Methodist College, which was established in 1870, was purchased. UT Southern, which has its main campus in Pulaski, is the undergraduate program’s fourth site overall in the UT System.

It is the only public four-year institution of higher education located between Chattanooga and Memphis, and its campus is conveniently placed near Tennessee’s southern border, approximately 70 miles south of Nashville and 40 miles north of Huntsville, Alabama.

History of the University of Tennessee Southern

Originally called Martin Methodist College, the University of Tennessee Southern took its name from Thomas Martin, who in 1870 left an early endowment contribution of $30,000 through a clause in his will, establishing a school for ladies in Giles County. His legacy was the realization of his daughter Victoria’s ambition, who asked her father to start a school for young ladies much like this before she passed away at the age of twenty.

Born in 1799, Thomas Martin was the son of a Methodist clergyman who later relocated to Pulaski, Tennessee, during his formative years. He was a millionaire because of his exceptional business sense and early success in the business sector.

In 1875, the college relocated to its present site on seven acres that it had paid Governor John C. Brown $16,000 for. The college was run as a four-year boarding school for women for a long time, with an elementary section for Pulaski’s youth. Among its distinguished alumni are numerous influential people.

A deal was struck in 1908, and the Tennessee Conference of The Methodist Episcopal Church, South, received ownership of the college’s assets from the Board of Trustees. The college’s name was changed from Martin Female College to Martin College, and both its funding and stature started to rise. The college became coeducational in 1938.

Male enrollment has increased to the point where the student body is roughly divided between half men and half women. The adjacent property was bought and added to the campus as the college expanded.
