About Ball State University Scholarships

Numerous scholarships are awarded based on leadership, ability, academics, or volunteerism. But there are also need-based programs available to help students.  In addition to the numerous scholarships Ball State grants on its own, several of our academic departments also provide support to students enrolled in their programs.

Concerning Ball State University

Ball State’s steadfast faith in an education grounded in creativity, morals, and intellectual curiosity dates back to the late 1800s, when Muncie business leaders saw the need for a local university to further the growth of their community.

The five Ball Brothers—Lucius, William, Edmund, Frank, and George—were among the visionaries. They were businesspeople and philanthropists who relocated to Muncie from New York in order to grow their glass container company.

A Teaching School Opens

In 1899, a private teacher training institution was founded. The Ball brothers bought the abandoned college’s property and buildings and gave them to the State of Indiana after the community’s attempts to keep it going failed. Indiana needed more and better teachers; thus, this gift became the Indiana State Normal School Eastern Division, which opened in 1918.

The Indiana General Assembly renamed the institution Ball Teachers College in 1922 and Ball State Teachers College in 1929 as a way of honoring the Ball family’s magnanimity.

The College Becomes a University

The regional teachers’ college started to draw instructors from outside the Midwest by the 1960s, and students started looking for majors in newly emerging fields like business and architecture. Along with national trends, enrollment and financing increased dramatically, and new buildings and degree programs were introduced.

Ball State University was renamed by the Indiana General Assembly in 1965 in recognition of its extraordinary development in enrollment and facilities, the range and caliber of its educational offerings, and the expectation of a larger role it would play in the future of the state.

With highly regarded programs in education, architecture, business, communications, fine arts, sciences and humanities, and the health professions, Ball State University has developed into a top university in the world.

Ball State University Scholarship Categories

Ball State Midwest Regional Scholarship

New undergraduate students from three Midwestern states may be eligible for a substantial tuition reduction through the Ball State Midwest Regional Scholarship. Compared to our regular out-of-state tuition, Ball State may now offer tuition to legitimate residents of Illinois, Kentucky, and Michigan and save more than $50,000 over four years because of this scholarship.

Benefits

This scholarship reduces the full-time, on-campus tuition and student services fees for qualified out-of-state students at Ball State to a maximum of 150% of what Indiana residents would normally have to pay for comparable services. This discount does not apply to graduate, online, distance learning, or off-campus tuition.

This scholarship only covers the cost of tuition and the student services charge. The receiver is still liable for all other Ball State expenses, including those related to overload, courses, recreation, health, and residence hall technology, as well as recreation and recreation center fees.

Midwest Student Exchange Program (MSEP)

Under the MSEP, the full-time, on-campus tuition and student services fee at Ball State for eligible out-of-state residents is reduced to a maximum of 150% of the full-time, in-state tuition and fees paid by residents of Indiana. This program is not eligible for tuition paid by online, remote, or off-campus means.

MSEP only covers tuition and student services. Ball State’s technology, leisure center, health center, resident hall technology, overload, and course fees are the recipient’s responsibility.
