While you are in New Zealand, the University of Waikato is taking applications for doctoral studies right now. For the 2024–25 school year, the University of Waikato PhD Scholarship gives Ph.D. study scholarships that cover all costs to students from all over the world, both inside and outside of New Zealand.
The awards will give the winners a monthly stipend that will cover all of their living costs. Most of the time, applicants should plan to study full-time at the University of Waikato. However, those who have compelling reasons to do so may have their applications for part-time study accepted.
About the University of Waikato
A group of Hamilton residents worked hard for many years to get the University of Waikato built in their city. It opened in 1964 after many years of fighting. At first, there weren’t many facilities, but in early 1965, Governor-General Sir Bernard Fergusson publicly opened some new ones. Vice-Chancellor Sir Don Llewellyn was the first one.
In the 1980s, Waikato was New Zealand’s university with the most rapid growth. More and more people wanted to study computer science, and in 1987, the growing department was made into a School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences.
The university has always had a close connection with the teachers’ college next door. It was the first university in New Zealand to merge with a regional teachers’ college, setting an example for other universities to follow. It was through its training programs that the university first became known in Tauranga.
New Zealand’s Kīngitanga, Waikato-Tainui, and the University
The Kīngitanga and Waikato-Tainui, who are the traditional owners and guardians of the Waikato area, have worked with the University of Waikato for a long time. The University’s Hamilton campus is built on land that was once home to Ngāti Wairere and Ngāti Hauā of Tainui. After the Waikato Land Wars in 1864, the British government took a lot of this land. This was later found to be against the Treaty of Waitangi.
In 1995, the Crown made a deal with Waikato-Tainui to fix this problem. As part of the deal, the land where the Hamilton campus is located was given to the title of the first Māori King, Pōtatau Te Wherowhero, so it could not be given to anyone else. Waikato-Tainui now rents it to the university.
He set up Te Rōpū Manukura in 1991 as a group to help the University Council. In its role as guardian of the Treaty of Waitangi for the University, it now works with the University Council. Te Rōpū Manukura is today made up of people from more than 20 different iwi that live in the area around the university.
It was created in 2009 as Kīngitanga Day to honor and strengthen the ties between the university, Kīngitanga, Waikato-Tainui, and many other iwi across the land. Kīngitanga Day is an event that focuses on the community and is held every year in September.
