About Shell

Shell, the oldest energy firm in Nigeria, has a long-standing and ongoing commitment to the nation, its people, and its economy. With an average of 93,000 people across more than 70 countries, Shell is a large global group of oil and petrochemical enterprises. To contribute to the creation of a sustainable energy future, we make use of cutting-edge technologies and adopt creative strategies.

Nigerian Shell

Shell, one of the top energy firms in the world, is essential to finding sustainable solutions to address the world’s rising energy needs on an economic, environmental, and social level. Of all the foreign oil and gas firms present in Nigeria, Shell has been there for more than 50 years and has the biggest presence there.

Since 1937, Shell has operated in Nigeria. Onshore, shallow, and deep water oil exploration and production have all been pioneered by Shell enterprises and investments. Shell has also been at the forefront of gas development for more than 40 years, producing and supplying gas to domestic and international markets.

Our ideals

The Shell General Business Principles are built upon our basic principles of honesty, integrity, and respect for others.

Our commercial endeavors in Nigeria

The first commercial oil exports from Nigeria were made in 1958 by the largest Shell firm in Nigeria, the Shell Petroleum Development Firm of Nigeria Limited (SPDC). The government-owned Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) – NNPC (55% stake), SPDC (30%), Total E&P Nigeria Ltd. (10%), and the ENI subsidiary Agip Oil Company Limited (5%), are partners in a joint venture known as the SPDC JV. It focuses on the Niger Delta’s onshore and shallow water oil and gas development.

The Bonga field, Nigeria’s first deepwater oil find, is operated by Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPCO). The Bonga facility has the ability to generate 150 MM standard cubic feet per day of gas and more than 200,000 barrels of oil per day.

Shell The only foreign oil and gas company to establish a gas distribution company in Nigeria to serve industry customers is Nigeria Gas (SNG).
Nigeria LNG (NLNG) is a joint venture established in 1989 with the goal of exporting LNG and natural gas liquids. It was the country’s initial LNG project. Together with NNPC (49%), Total (15%), and ENI (10.4%), Shell maintains a 25.6% stake in the company.

Shell Nigerian statistics

The assets of the SPDC JV include roughly 50 active oil fields, 5,000 kilometers of gas and oil pipelines, 5 gas plants, and 2 significant oil export ports (Bonny and Forcados).
The Bonga project was Nigeria’s first oil and gas venture in a 1,000-meter-deep sea. When it started producing in 2005, it raised Nigeria’s oil capacity by 10% and has a daily output capacity of 200,000 barrels of oil and 150 million standard cubic feet of gas.

Six processing units (trains) make up the NLNG plant at Bonny Island, which has a total processing capacity of 22 million tonnes of LNG and up to 5 million tonnes of natural gas liquids (LPG and condensate) per year. About 7% of the world’s total LNG supply comes from NLNG.

Our involvement

In addition to the energy they produce and the cash they bring in for the nation, Shell Companies in Nigeria (SCiN) also significantly contribute to the economy through their supply chains, local content, and social investment.

A total of 739,000 barrels of oil equivalent (boe/d) were produced on average by Shell-operated enterprises in Nigeria in 2014. Of this total, 578,000 boe/d were produced by the Shell Petroleum Development Company Joint Venture (SPDC JV) and 161,000 by the Shell Nigeria Exploration and Production Company (SNEPCo). Natural gas is provided by Shell Nigeria Gas (SNG) to 85 industrial customers, and the SPDC JV is the main gas supplier to Nigeria LNG. In 2014, the Afam VI power plant of SPDC provided over 18% of the country’s grid-connected electricity.

90% of export revenue and 75% of total government revenue in Nigeria come from the oil and gas sector.

SCiN significantly contributes to the nation’s ability for contracting and human capital development. Nigerian businesses received 90% of SCiN contracts in 2014.

Several social investment initiatives are pursued by SCiN, with an emphasis on community and enterprise development, education, and health. The Shell Group spends the most money on social investments in Nigeria.

As required by law, in 2014 Shell-operated ventures gave $202 million (Shell share, $93.6 million) to the NDDC.

The SPDC JV and SNEPCo directly invested $112 million (Shell’s share, $34 million) in social investment projects.

Nigeria now has the Shell Group’s highest concentration of social investment spending as a result of these factors taken together.
