About The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Scholarship Program

When Friedrich Ebert was chosen as the first president of the Weimar Republic, it was nearly difficult for bright kids from low-income families to attend college or participate in research projects. The first scholarships were given out following the establishment of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung in 1925 to exceptionally gifted young people from working-class backgrounds who were actively participating in the fledgling democracy of the Weimar Republic.

One of the objectives of the FES is still to combat social disadvantages by aiding students who are already actively committed to social democracy and who will do so in the future.

FES will award grants to around 2.700 undergraduate and graduate students this year.

Students from abroad

The FES also provides assistance to foreign applicants who are enrolled in German universities or colleges or pursuing postgraduate coursework there at the time of application. Except for those who are already getting some financial assistance from governmental sources, up to 40 students each year from Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Eastern Europe may be eligible for the scholarship program.
