Job Description

To lead the execution of the strategy for the operation of the Chirano underground mine in Ghana, Africa.

Manage the overall underground mining discipline ensuring alignment with the organization’s overall strategy, and ensure the continued growth of mine operations, maximizing operational efficiencies, safety, and profitability, and cultivating exceptional stakeholder and employee satisfaction.

Job Responsibilities

1. To execute operational strategies for mine operations

• Executes strategies that support the growth of mine operations; ensures strategies are concretely linked to the organization’s overall strategy
• Ensures the underground mining team including contractors understands the operational goals and there is alignment with the Company’s overall strategy
• Manages the execution of strategies to enhance current mine operations practices and performance
• Develops systems and measures that appropriately assess performance in mine operations and reviews progress to ensure achievement of targets
• Assists in formulating the annual operating and capital budgets for mine operations, consistent with Kinross’ established financial guidelines and business planning process
• Be involved in the establishment and maintenance of budgetary goals and compliance
• Achieves short-range and long-range mine plans with engineering and mobile maintenance support
• Establishes production levels and ensures that mobile maintenance and repair priorities for equipment is complied with
• Evaluates and selects equipment and supplies
• Understands and implements local mining regulations 

2. To oversee and manage the overall underground mining discipline, including contractors

• Maintains overall control of the mining operations by managing and overseeing the underground team 
• Achieves Chirano’s targets in safety, production, quality, environment, and cost control 
• Ensures compliance with all statutory requirements and company procedures by all employees, including contractors
• Effectively manages the budget 
• Demonstrates commitment and leadership at the mine by enforcing site rules and regulations, and leading by example
• Effectively participates in and communicates mine plans and schedules to the mining operations team 
• Completes reports for the Company as and when required
• Manages and directs all underground-related projects and, where necessary, introduce new projects to execute on all listed strategies pertaining to safety, efficiency, productivity, and cost control.

3. To lead and manage the contract team responsible for executing mine operations strategies

• Identifies strategies and key performance goals and acts as an advisor; works to overcome challenges and barriers and minimize risk
• Sets performance targets and measures, monitors and manages overall performance of employees and/or contract workers at the mine
• Assists in building the capabilities of the mining team to enhance the mine operation’s ability to achieve financial and operating strategies; leverages the talents of the operation, and takes corrective action where necessary
• Spearhead the capacity building of underground staff through coaching and mentoring and knowing your team
• Ensures there is a comprehensive and effective succession management strategy in place for the operation; identifies succession role requirements and high potential talent and actively develops key talent
• Keep teams well informed and motivated and ensure incentives are relevant, well communicated and effective

4. To develop and implement business practices and policies within mine operations 

• Implements and where possible, improve on established processes, policies, systems, and practices within mine operations that maximize operational efficiencies and competitive advantage
• Acts as a change agent and project sponsor for key initiatives; models organizational values, sets the cultural tone, and prioritizes business goals
• Collaborates with senior management to identify and analyze business requirements and the implications for the team; identifies gaps and implements agreed upon solutions
• Monitors and reports on the achievement of targets and revises strategies as needed
• Assists in the formation of company policy
• Advises and cooperates with all other departments affected by changes in mine operations and assists in overall mine management through interaction with other departments
• Establishes safety and training standards with assistance from the safety department
• Evaluates operation policies and directives to ensure consistency with safe operating procedures

Sustainability and Safety Expectations

• Understand policies and procedures relating to safety, the environment, and individual and organizational development.
• Ensures that employees and/or contract workers and respective work areas comply with Health and Safety policies and regulations.
• Ensures employees and/or contract workers have the necessary training, skills, knowledge, and tools to do their jobs safely.
• Provides support to all areas on issues that jointly involve production and safety. Observes operations to detect violation of safety regulations and compile safety and production records.
• Assists in accident and incident investigations and ensures that recommendations are implemented by agreed upon dates.

Scope of Responsibility and Complexity

Work is performed within general authority, receiving little direction. Work may involve non-routine situations where established procedures do not always apply and problem resolution requires making risk-assessed modifications to existing methods of operation.

Ensures established results are achieved involving support and technical input of other departments. Work is reviewed for the attainment of objectives and effectiveness of results.

Provides general direction to staff with an emphasis on the execution of plans and delivery of services.

Working Conditions and Environmental Factors

This is a rotational position in that the employee must work a 6 week on / 3 week off rotation. Meals and accommodation are provided during the time spent at camp at Chirano (CGML) in Ghana.

A pre-employment medical will be necessary before employment is to commence. 

Education and Experience

• Experience in the management of an underground mining operation with competence in the management of mining contracts is an essential requirement
• Bachelor’s Degree in Mining Engineering preferred
• Formal professional designation in appropriate area of expertise
• 8-12 years of related work experience, with experience working in remote locations on a rotational schedule
• Experience managing diverse employees (language, cultural, religious, etc)
• Experience leading teams in a related environment
• Be fluent in English
• Must possess knowledge of technical services engineering techniques as they apply to ore body evaluation and mine operations
• Must possess advanced knowledge of mining and the integration of the mining functions
• Must pass the requirements and certificate exam for the underground manager’s certificate in Ghana

Skills

• Strong verbal, written, analytical, and persuasive skills and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of employees and management
• Excellent administrative and organizational skills with the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
• Good working Knowledge of MS Office

Travel Requirements

• Rotational system
• Ability to travel internationally
