New Canada Immigration Stream, Open Work Permit & Faster Temporary Resident Permit

Canada unveils a new immigration route that gives priority to health professionals. Canada has announced new open work permits for candidates in the spouse and family classes.

One of the important industries in Canada’s labor force that is experiencing unheard-of shortages is the health industry. To meet this issue, the Canadian government is inviting professionals in the healthcare industry, such as physicians, nurses, dentists, pharmacists, physiotherapists, and optometrists, to apply for permanent residency.

The first round of category-based selection is currently open and will accept applications from 500 healthcare professionals. In July, 1,500 workers invites to apply in a second round. Sean Fraser, Canada’s Minister of Immigration, made updates to Express Entry, the country’s premier economic immigration program, last month.

Health professionals remain working around the clock to offer individuals in communities across Canada top-notch treatment. Still, it’s obvious that our health system needs additional staff to keep providing the high-quality care Canadians are entitled to. The First Health Care category-based selection round, which would improve access to permanent residents for skilled individuals with healthcare experience, was announced by Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship.

Canada’s New Plans for Health Workers

He continued by saying that Canada is looking forward to receiving numerous medical specialists. In addition to current immigration measures, a special round of invitations for health workers will be issued to fill labor shortages in the health sector.

Skilled refugees and other displaced people have options to use their education, skills, and experience to continue their professions in Canada thanks to the Economic Mobility Pathways Pilot, for which two additional streams were recently revealed. Over 50% of the applications for individuals working as nurse assistants, orderlies, and patient service associates were received for this pilot, which has so far experienced the biggest adoption in the healthcare industry.

Changes were made to express entry in April to make it easier to provide doctors practicing publicly financed medicine in Canada permanent resident visas. The Canadian government said in December that it will invest 90 million dollars in initiatives to help break down obstacles that prohibit qualified and competent immigrants from getting experience in their professions or fields of study.

21,656 skilled immigrants entered Canada between 2017 and 2022 to work in the health sector.

Canada Announces New Open Work Permit for Spousal and Family Class Applicants

Canada has unveiled several new measures as part of its goal to make it simpler for permanent residents to bring their families to the country, including a new open work visa for applicants in the spouse and family class. The new policies should help address the labor shortages Canada has been experiencing since the outbreak.

To allow families to spend more time together while they wait for their permanent residency to be approved, Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship, has announced speedier Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) processing and more thoughtful application measures. The prominent measures among those announced were;

  • Faster Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) processing times for spousal applicants
  • Next, new and dedicated processing tools for spousal TRV applicants
  • Also, a new open work permit for spousal and family class applicants
  • Moreover, open work permit extensions for open work permit holders expire between August 1st and the end of 2023.

In the future, the majority of these applications process within 30 days, and applicants will gain access to processing procedures tailored to their situation as spouses or independents. These new tools help to process several applications.

We have observed a 93% approval rate for this group of applications. In a statement, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) said.

Further Details

For spouse candidates and their dependant children who live in Canada with their sponsor and have temporary resident status, Canada has made open work permits available. As soon as they submit a comprehensive application for permanent residence under the Spouse or Common Law Partner in Canada Class (SPCLC) or other family class programs, partners and dependents can now apply for and get an open work visa.

Fraser added that open work permit holders, including spousal applicants, who have open work permit expirations between August 1 and December 31, 2023, can extend their work permits for an additional 18 months. Many people with post-graduation work permits that were about to expire recently received a similar choice.

Canada Processing Times

Canada will process applications more quickly in 2022 because of ongoing improvements in customer service. Since July 2022, millions of people have received decisions on their cases as a consequence of IRCC’s completion of more than 5.2 million applications throughout our diverse lines of business. For 80% of non-Quebec applications, new spousal sponsorship applicants process within the service standard of 12 months.

  • First, foreign nationals can obtain open work permits in a variety of circumstances. However, not everyone qualifies for an extension.
  • Then, under this expedited processing method, it is only made available to spouses of permanent residence candidates awaiting a decision on their application for permanent residence.
  • Also, spouses sponsored by the family class and have a valid temporary resident visa, as well as their dependent children
  • Additionally, the majority of work permit holders’ spouses, common-law partners, and dependent children
  • Likewise, Canada issued about 175,000 work permits and work permit extensions to spouses and common-law partners of study permit holders in 2022.
