BRIEF HISTORY OF KNUST

Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) is a public university in Ghana which places much emphasis on science and technology. It also doubles up as the main institution of higher learning in Ghana’s Ashanti Region and Kumasi Metropolis.
KNUST opened officially on 22 January 1952.

In October 1952, the School of Engineering and the Department of Commerce were established and both opened their doors to their very first set of students. Since then, the institution has grown to become one of Ghana’s largest universities, topping the list of the best universities in Ghana and West Africa in 2019.

Additionally, it was ranked 706th globally and 14th in Africa in the same year. It was named the best for a second time in 2020, moving up to be placed as the 12th greatest in Africa. KNUST was ranked 14th internationally and first in Africa in the most recent Times Higher Education impact ranking in 2022.
