Job Opportunities in Saudi Arabia | Get a Job and Work in Saudi Arabia

The Desert Kingdom is home to around 10 million immigrants. The majority of them are from South East Asia and work as manual workers. It is anticipated that over 125,000 foreign residents from Western countries work in Saudi Arabia as well.

These figures are unlikely to fall in the foreseeable future, despite the fact that the government is working hard to improve job opportunities for its own citizens by investing in education and instituting quotas to limit the number of expats in Saudi firms. Employers have been obliged to pay large fines since November 2012 if they hire too many foreigners and not enough Saudis. Furthermore, the government has recently established a new ‘Saudization’ program that will assist Saudis from a young age in preparing them for work. The hope is that if the Saudi population is properly taught, ex-pats will no longer be required.

Economy of the First Order

With around 18% of the world’s proven petroleum reserves, it’s no surprise that the kingdom’s economy is primarily reliant on oil. Petroleum, in particular, accounts for 85% of export earnings, 73% of budget revenues, and 50% of GDP. This helps to explain why Saudi Arabia is one of the few high-income countries with a thriving manufacturing industry.

Saudi Arabia’s service industry has exploded as a result of recent diversification initiatives to minimize the country’s economic reliance on oil exports. The service sector contributed around 51.8% of GDP in 2015, making the tertiary sector one of the most important sources of income for the national economy. Given the temperature and topography, agriculture has little prospect of playing a significant role, but there have been some government efforts to reduce the population’s reliance on food imports.

The industrial industry has benefited substantially from the diversification effort as well. Aside from the local petrochemical industry, special emphasis has been placed on electricity generation, telecommunications, and natural gas exploration. The government is also investing more than $70 billion in the construction of six economic cities. The hope is that organizing an “industry huddle” can stimulate businesses, increasing production and creativity.

Learning About the Industry

While it is not the simplest place to find employment, if you have a high degree of knowledge and experience, there are lots of options for working in Saudi Arabia. Many expats work in engineering (particularly in the oil business), information technology, healthcare and medical, banking and financial services, education (particularly for women), telecommunications, or construction. Because Saudi Arabia is increasing its investment in urban planning, transportation infrastructure, food processing, and water resource management, international specialists with experience in these fields may have an advantage.

The majority of expats working in Saudi Arabia were hired while still living in their prior city of residence. It is extremely difficult, if not impossible, for foreigners to travel to, say, Riyadh or Jeddah without an offer of employment. The Saudi government’s recent campaign for “Saudization” has also complicated matters.

Private consultants or agents representing Saudi firms in major cities across the world primarily seek managerial roles. Intra-company transfers within multinational firms also account for a sizable proportion of foreign assignees. Anyone interested in operating in Saudi Arabia should first contact their country’s chamber of commerce.

Work Permits and Sponsors: Stay on their Good Side

You cannot obtain a work permit unless you have a firm job offer. Individuals cannot apply for a permit on their own; their sponsor must do it on their behalf. Every expat has a sponsor, who is usually their employer and serves as both a guardian and guarantor during their time in Saudi Arabia. Individuals, companies, or institutions, such as your Saudi chamber of commerce, or a business colleague or partner, can serve as sponsors. Some people may expect to be compensated for their services.

Your sponsor will most likely be your main point of contact in the kingdom and can assist you with many of the challenges you may face, from obtaining a visa to finding suitable accommodation. At the same time, they are in charge of you and thus have a vested interest in your well-being and good behavior. Any infraction you commit while living and working in Saudi Arabia may reflect negatively on your sponsor.
