Introduction
Residents of the UAE who had trouble updating their Emirates IDs can now apply to not have to pay late fees. The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs, and Port Security (ICP) recently reminded people through their official social media outlets about the exemption process and the specific criteria that must be met.
This article talks about who is eligible and how to apply.
Conditions for not having to pay late fees
To avoid paying late fees when renewing an Emirates ID, a person must meet one of the following conditions:
- The number on ID card
- Information on how to get in touch (a current cell phone number and email address)
- A valid original passport
- A valid original entry permit
- Valid original residence visa
- Evidence that backs up the customer’s request, which shows that there was a real reason for not renewing the Emirates ID. But it is very important to back up this claim with proof.
Eligibility Requirements for Exemption
According to the ICP, people can ask to not have to pay late fees if they didn’t get or renew their Emirates ID card or the ID cards of people they support by the deadline. However, proof must be shown in the following situations:
- If a person has lived outside the UAE for more than three months, their residency ended while they were away, or their ID card expired after they left the UAE, they must show a travel document to prove this.
- If your ID card expires abroad because of an executive or court order, your passport is being held for a case, or you want to renew it, you should submit an official letter from the right authorities.
- If you are bedridden, have a disease that can spread, or are partially or fully disabled, you need a medical license from a medical authority.
- The people who work for diplomatic or consular posts in the country and the people they are responsible for.
- People over 70 can’t go to customer service centers because they need to show proof of age, like a passport or birth certificate.
- Delays in registering or getting an ID card because of mistakes in the paperwork, problems with the Emirates ID system, or the acts of Emirates ID staff or the offices assigned to type.
How to Apply for an Exemption
There are three legal ways for people to ask to be excused from paying late fees:
- Customer Happiness Centers: Applicants can start the application process by going to one of these centers.
- Smart Services: You can fill out the application online at icp.gov.ae or through the ICP Smart app.
- Typing Centers: Applicants can also apply for relief through typing centers that are approved by the government.
Steps to Applying Online
Follow these steps to ask for an exemption online:
- Use your UAE Pass to sign in to the ICP website or the ICP Smart app, or make a new account.
- Go to the “Public Services” part.
