How to Ensure a Well-informed Arrival as an Immigrant in Canada

As a newcomer to Canada, it is critical to arrive educated to have a smooth experience. This applies to you regardless of whether you have a study permit, a work permit, or are a permanent resident of Canada. Visitors visiting Canada must also fulfill various tasks and provide certain documentation to complete their stay in the nation. This means that they must present their travel documentation, such as a passport, visa, or Electronic Travel Authorization, to determine an individual’s status in Canada. They will be required to present all of these documents at the port of entry.

Things you’ll need before visiting Canada as a new PR

If you are granted Canadian Permanent Residence, you will be issued a COPR. This is your Confirmation of Permanent Residence, and it allows you to remain in the country as a new Permanent Resident.

Once you have received the COPR, you must visit Canada to officially complete the PR procedure before the COPR expires.

If you already live in Canada, you will be able to obtain an electronic copy of COPR through a digital site. You may later obtain a printout and utilize it to demonstrate COPR acceptance for Permanent Residence in Canada. Your medical test, passport, and visa sticker must be present with this document, which has a one-year validity period. IRCC does not have the option to prolong the COPR in certain cases. Furthermore, people who have not visited Canada within the validity period will be required to reapply for permanent residency. In other words, this applies to anyone who goes to Canada after their COPR has expired.

If you are from a nation that requires a visa for your trip to Canada, you will receive a PR visa along with your COPR. However, if your home country requires an eTA, you must obtain one before visiting Canada.

Things a work permit holder must have before flying to Canada

When traveling to Canada with a work permit, you must bring the following documents:

  • A passport
  • Any required travel documentation
  • A proof that you can meet all of your job criteria. These may include confirmation of your education and work experience.
  • A visitor visa or an eTA
  • A positive or neutral LMIA copy of your employer. In addition, if you work in Quebec and want to get an LMIA, you must have a CAQ.

Furthermore, if your Canadian employment does not meet LMIA requirements but you come to the United States to work for a specific business, you must provide an employment number. When uploading crucial information via the employer portal, the employer must have received this number.

Additionally, work permit holders must show proof of work permit approval. They can demonstrate to border officials that their work visa was issued by submitting a letter of introduction or port of entry letter.

What is a letter of intent?

An LOI is required for applicants who obtain a work visa. This letter is not a work permit; rather, it is an approval letter certifying the validity of the work permit.

New immigrants must be able to persuade the border services officer of the following:

  • Fulfilling Canada’s admission requirements;
  • Declaring their plan to depart Canada once their allowed stay expires;
  • Having the findings of their immigration medical examinations. They must keep in mind, however, that their medical exam results must not expire before they arrive in Canada. If this is the case, they must undergo additional testing before flying to Canada.

Notably, the border services officer will decide whether the applicants will be granted a work permit and allowed to remain in Canada.

Documents necessary for holders of study permits before flying to Canada

If you are coming to Canada on a study permit, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Show proof of a valid travel document, such as a passport;
  • Display a letter of intent from a visa office. The letter will include a permit reference number that the government will use to send the related permit.
  • Obtain a legitimate copy of your educational institution’s or school’s Letter of Acceptance;
  • Present all relevant letters of reference and other important papers to the visa office;
  • To enter Canada, you must have an eTA, visitor visa, green card (an equivalent document from the United States), or a valid travel document.
  • Having enough money to fund their stay in Canada. However, the amount of money will vary depending on the type of travel and accommodation.

As a potential student applicant, your health must be excellent, and you must not have any criminal history or immigration-related convictions. If necessary, you must also provide the results of an immigration medical test.

Finally, you must demonstrate to the immigration official that you have important ties to your home nation. This must be your motivation for returning to your own nation. You must be able to demonstrate that you intend to depart Canada once your studies are over.

Things to bring with you when you arrive in Canada as a newbie

Before bringing their things to Canada, newcomers must complete a Canada Border Services Agency declaration. This will be their legal declaration that they intend to bring assets to the country. They must also be aware of border restrictions on food and consumable goods.

The CBSA is responsible for border monitoring and protection in Canada. It also ensures that products and people are transported legally. According to CBSA filings, travelers arriving in Canada can legally carry particular assets with them. These are especially advantageous for newcomers because they allow them to bring large assets into the country without paying taxes on the products.

However, newcomers to Canada must keep in mind that they will not be able to obtain all of their vital goods right away. In such cases, newbies are frequently required to submit a list of “Goods to Follow.” This indicates that all products obtained after their arrival have been disclosed and are legal. They must provide this list to the CBSA at the airport and obtain a receipt. Furthermore, when they ultimately bring their assets to Canada, they must re-submit this at the port of entry.

Notably, there are no restrictions on the amount of cash they can bring with them when they initially come to Canada. If the amount exceeds CAD 10,000, it will be reported to CBSA.
