HOW TO APPLY: MasterCard Foundation Scholars Program 2023

About Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program

Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program envisions a transformative network of young people and institutions driving inclusive and equitable socio-economic change in Africa. Since 2012, the Program has helped nearly 40,000 African youth pursue secondary or tertiary education.

We must address systemic barriers in higher education, strengthen capacity, support innovative solutions across critical sectors, and connect ecosystem actors to amplify our impact across Africa to help Scholars and young people succeed. The Program works with young people, universities, NGOs, and other higher education stakeholders to provide inclusive and relevant education, a smooth transition into dignified and fulfilling work, and transformative lives.

Mastercard Foundation Scholarship

The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program, Africa’s largest scholarship, and leadership initiative equips talented and diverse young people with a passion for giving back with the skills and mindsets to achieve their goals and improve their communities. The Scholars Program goes beyond scholarships. It covers tuition and living expenses and provides mentoring, leadership training, tutoring, internships, and career services.

The Scholars Program, implemented by a Pan-African and global network of more than 40 universities and non-governmental organizations, promotes inclusion and accessibility, innovation in teaching and learning, research, and collaboration across critical sectors and stakeholders to strengthen the higher education ecosystem.

Since 2012, the Scholars Program has supported nearly 40,000 young transformative leaders. Mastercard Foundation Scholars start businesses, create jobs, and use technology to address climate change and health care.

By adding 60,000 scholarships and partnering with new universities and ecosystem stakeholders, most of them in Africa, the Program will more than double its impact by 2030. Together, we will foster African-led economic growth and prosperity.

Africa’s future is bright! Will you improve the continent?

  • Are you an African leader who builds communities?
  • Are you a dedicated young person with academic goals beyond your means?
  • Are you a student interested in joining an exceptional network of young changemakers?
  • Are you a woman, refugee, internally displaced person, disabled person, or other marginalized community that makes higher education difficult?

Partner universities and marginalized group-focused NGOs implement the Scholars Program. Applicants should check each institution’s guidelines and contact them directly.

Who is Eligible?

  • Bachelor’s degree applicants must be under 29. Master’s degree applicants must be under 35.
  • Each university also has eligibility requirements. Check the school’s application requirements before applying.

Studying

Academically strong and committed to helping others, students can apply for the program. Partner universities and NGOs run the Scholars Program. Each partner handles application and decision-making. Scholars must apply through their chosen university.

Partner schools set deadlines and fees. We suggest researching application guidelines or contacting the institution of your choice. The Scholars Program will reimburse application fees for schools that require them.

Participating universities

Pre-application:

  • Check the university’s Program website for eligibility, requirements, deadlines, and other application instructions.
  • Choose your school and program. You can apply to any number of schools, but it takes a lot of work to complete an application package.
  • Prepare submission documents. Application documents vary by institution. Incomplete applications result from late document submission.
  • Take any required tests a few months before applying. All Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program applicants must meet university admissions requirements. For some partners, international students must take the SAT, TOEFL, or IELTS. These are optional for other university partners.
  • Referrals. Most universities need recommendation letters. Ask a teacher, mentor, or community leader for help before applying. Some universities require online recommendations. The applicant must notify the referees of the online submission.
  • Applying: Follow university program instructions. Some partners only accept online applications; others require paper applications.
  • Avoid applying on the last day. Make sure your application package has all the required documents. Late or incomplete Scholars Program applications are rejected.

What if I can’t afford admission?

Many of our implementing partners require application fees. International students must submit TOEFL and/or SAT scores to US universities. These costs can deter many Scholars. We cannot change these admission requirements, but the following options have helped some applicants.

  • Your university may help you take tests. Ask your counselor or principal for a letter of support if you think you can pass the SAT and TOEFL. Tell the university admissions office about your story and letters of support.
  • Education USA has helped some students. Their advisors may help you find SAT/TOEFL funding.
  • We partner with African universities that offer undergraduate or graduate programs without SAT or TOEFL scores.
