The process of obtaining permanent residency on a work visa can vary depending on the country and the individual circumstances of the applicants. Below are countries well-known to have relatively fast processes for obtaining permanent residency on a work visa.

Canada

Canada has one of the easiest pathways to settle in the country. One can move down to Canada on a permanent residency pathway through the Express Entry program or the Provincial Nomination program. Additionally, Canada has several other pathways you can explore as a skilled worker to gain permanent residency.

From February 2023, carers can apply for permanent residency in Canada after working in the country for 2 years.

Australia

Australia also has reputation for having an easy pathway to permanent residency in the country. Just like Canada, Australia also has its way of moving down to the country as a permanent resident. This includes pathways such as Subclass 190 and Subclass 189.

Additionally, Australia also has different work visas that lead to permanent residency in the country with a time frame of a year or two. Australia has one of the most work visas in the world for skilled migrants with one of the easiest pathways to settle.

Germany is the easiest European country to gain permanent residency as a worker. The EU Blue Card allows highly skilled workers to apply for permanent residency in 33 months. However, one can also apply in as little as 21 months.

The EU Blue Card can be applied for in Germany by people who have a college degree, professional experience, and a minimum salary of at least €56,400 annually. Additionally, it is much easier to obtain if your occupation is under the shortage occupation list in the country.

Shortage occupations are occupations with few workers in the country. As of 2023, individuals with jobs listed under shortage occupations can get this card earning as low as €3,796 gross or more per month. This equates to €45,552 per year.

Difference between a Work Visa & EU Blue Card

  • Work visas need a renewal on a job change, however, EU Blue Card does not require renewal after changing jobs
  • Also, on the EU Blue Card, you can apply for permanent residency just after 33 months instead of the 60 months on the work visa
