How to Prepare

Additionally, learners will be able to operate, maneuver, and become familiar with all terminal-related gear and equipment thanks to the MSoE’s Terminal Operations Simulators, RTG Crane, and Ship-to-Shore Container Crane.

To supplement the superior instruction offered by the Maritime School of Excellence, additional simulators including Reach Stacker, Counter Balance, Mobile Harbour Crane, Rail Mounted Gantry, Straddle Carrier, and Truck Handling Simulator will be available.

Eligibility Requirements

In order to qualify for the Transnet Graduate Trainee Program, applicants must fulfill the requirements listed below:

  • Candidates must have graduated.
  • As an Operator Lifting Equipment (OLE), your primary goal will be to support port and terminal operations.

You will require:

  • Completion of Grade 12 (matriculation) with Math and Physical Science,
  • A valid driver’s license classified as Code 8/EB for at least three years,
  • Computer-savvy,
  • Maintain a healthy and fit body.
  • Be prepared to work in shifts and inclement weather.
  • Pass a pre-entry exam as well as a medical examination, which will test your ability to operate at heights, depth perception, and hand-eye coordination.
  • Technical certificate knowledge in the range of N1 to N6 will be helpful.
  • Skipper Port Operations (SPO): In a port operations region, an SPO is in charge of a vessel that weighs more than 25 tons but less than 200 tons.

You will require:

  • Completion of Grade 12 (matriculation) with math and science,
  • Pass both the pre-entry exam and the medical exam.
  • Marine Motorman Grade II (MMG): As an MMG, you will work under the Chief Engineer to maintain, repair, and service the engines and auxiliary equipment on board a ship in the port operations region.

Here, you’ll require:

  • Completion of Grade 12 (matriculation) with math and science,
  • A general purpose rating (EGPR/GPR),
  • Pass the pre-entry test and the medical exam, and​
  • Maintain a healthy and fit body.
  • The minimum criteria vary depending on the program, but typically a Grade 12 student with a Level 4 in each of the following compulsory subjects: Mathematics, physical science, and English
