Agenda 111: Construction of largest number of hospital projects ever begins Tuesday

The flagship agenda of President Akufo-Addo to build 111 hospitals across the country is set to take off on Tuesday 17th of August 2021

The flagship agenda of President Akufo-Addo to build one hundred and eleven (Agenda 111) hospitals across the country is set to take off on Tuesday 17th of August 2021.

The Akufo-Addo administration as a result of the outbreak of the novel coronavirus, COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, realized the severity of its impacts in the several districts in the country which do not have hospitals.

To this end, government announced that it has decided to build hospitals in these left-out districts.

Government’s Bold Step

In fulfilling the promise to the nation and people of Ghana, at this time in our nation’s history, Government through the construction of these hospitals, is taking a bold step to correct what has been a long-endured anomaly in the distribution of health infrastructure across the country.

These hospitals constitute a major infrastructure programme, and when completed, will be a fulfillment of the government’s policy of a hospital in each district and region.

It will also improve the geographical coverage and access to healthcare for all Ghanaians wherever they reside in the country and will transform healthcare delivery in our local communities.

On completion, this venture will be the largest investment in healthcare infrastructure in the country since independence. Never before in the annals of this country’s health infrastructure development has universal access to good and affordable healthcare been so strategically envisioned.

Objectives of the Project

The objective of these projects as envisioned by the President, is to ensure that Ghanaians in every district and region in the country have access to quality healthcare services.

The proposed project, together with the country’s National Health Insurance Scheme, is expected to boost the provision of healthcare infrastructure and financial accessibility to healthcare, in line with government’s commitment to ensuring universal health care to all citizens and attainment of United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG3).

The hospitals when completed will further be a fulfilment of the government’s policy of a hospital in each district and region and improve the geographical coverage of healthcare delivery in the country, as well as offer improved access to healthcare for all Ghanaians.

In the process, the deliverables will also come with a model of accelerated construction of health facilities developed for future health projects.

Scope of the Project

The Agenda 111 Project according to the Health Ministry will cover the following deliverables: Designing, Procurement, Construction, Equipping and Commissioning 101 District Hospitals, 6 Regional Hospitals in the newly created regions (North East, Western North, Bono, Bono East, Oti and Savannah), as well as 1 Regional Hospital in the Western Region, 2 Psychiatric Hospitals in Kumasi and Tamale and redevelop the Accra Psychiatric Hospital.

There will also be the rehabilitation of the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital.

All the hospitals are expected to have a compliment of staff accommodation for Doctors, Nurses and other health workers.
