2024 World Bank Group Africa Fellowship

The World Bank Group Africa Region announced that the application process for the 2024 World Bank Group Africa Fellowship Program is now open to Sub-Saharan African individuals currently enrolled in Ph.D. programs and recent Ph.D. graduates.

The World Bank Group (WBG) Africa Fellowship Program seeks to support bright, young Africans who are pursuing or have recently finished a Ph.D. in a field related to the work of the World Bank. The program provides selected fellows a six-month placement at Washington, D.C., World Bank Group offices, or country offices to gain practical experience.

Eligibility Requirements

Candidates must fulfill the requirements below in order to be considered for the 2024 World Bank Group Africa Fellowship Program:

  • Applicants must be in their last year of a Ph.D. program or be recent Ph.D. graduates (within three years after graduation).
  • Applicants must have a strong command of written and spoken English.
  • Candidates must have good analytical and mathematical skills.
  • Applicants must be younger than 32 when the application period closes.
  • The academic credentials of the applicants must show that they have high academic and leadership potential.
  • After being contacted and accepting the offer, the chosen applicants will be recruited as temporary consultants for a period of six months beginning in January 2024. Fellows are eligible to receive consultant fees, round-trip economy flight airfare from their university or institution to Washington, D.C., or to a WBG foreign office, as well as worker’s compensation insurance.

WBG AFRICA FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM INFORMATION

The program is aimed at young, talented African citizens who are pursuing or have recently finished a Ph.D. in a field related to the work of the World Bank. Since its beginning, the fellowship program has been a great success, creating a solid pipeline of young African talent interested in working in international organizations, African governments, think tanks, and academia.

In order to get practical experience in WBG operations, the program provides chosen fellows a six-month assignment at WBG offices in Washington, D.C., or in-country offices. This entails creating and disseminating knowledge, creating national and international policies, and creating institutions to promote inclusive growth in underdeveloped nations.

Fellows will focus on research, economic policy, technical assistance, and loan operations that support the World Bank’s objectives of eradicating poverty and boosting shared prosperity while also gaining from research and innovation in a variety of industries.

SELECTION PROCESS

Phase I:

Depending on the applicants’ areas of specialization, a short list of individuals will be made available for hiring to the various WBG units. The status of applications and whether or not applicants have been shortlisted will be communicated to applicants.

Stage 2:

The various WBG units will be consulted before choosing the final list of fellows. All shortlisted candidates will be informed of their selection status after the selection process is complete. Following notification and approval, the chosen individuals will be employed as temporary consultants for a period of six months beginning in January 2024.

Fellows are qualified to receive consultant fees from their university or institution as well as round-trip economy plane airfare to Washington, D.C., or a WBG country office.
